Thanks for these beautiful songs, swarapriya...such a lovely film too. I loved Dharmputra as well! But the songs from Waqt are sublime.

Love songs from both of the films too. Cheers. -S

(Sharmila) Aradhana (1969)

This is the movie that made Rajesh Khanna a super star. This is the movie that showed how Sharmila could be a serious actress where she effortlessly moves through stages as a charming lady in love to a widower to an unwed mother to a person who can kill to protect herself and her child and to an adoring mother. This is the movie that showed the serious side of Shakti Samanta who hitherto was only known to make entertainers. This is the movie that made Kishore Kumar as a force to be reckoned with as a playback singer when the whole nation swayed away under their feet by the song "Roop Tera Mastana".

It is now widely known that after recording two duets with Rafi Saab, Burmanda fell ill. RD took over and composed rest of the songs and decided to go with Kishore. Irrespective of who composed what, the movie definitely had some memorable songs that leave an indelible impression on even a discriminating listener.

This movie was loosely based on the 1946 English film "To Each His Own". Olivia de Havilland won an Oscar as the Best Actress for her performance. Incidentally Sharmila grabbed her first Filmfare award for the same role in Hindi as the Best Actress. "Aradhana" also won the Best Picture award for the producer and director Samanta and for Kishore the Best Singer award for "Roop Tera Mastana".

The movie phenomenon was remade in Tamil as "Sivakamiyin Selavan" and in Telugu as "Kannavaari Kalau", both in 1974. I will upload songs from the Telugu movie in this section after uploading the Hindi songs.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. In the first post, I am including Amit's version of "Mere Sapnon Ki Raani". In the second post, I am including the song "Kora Kaghaz" sung by Lata and Suresh Wadker from a live performance they gave in 1981. Also, I am including a piece from Lata's Legend album, where Kishoreda fondly recalls how he first met Lata. Finally, also in the second post, I am including a small introduction where Lata talks about working with Kishoreda. This one is from her album "Lata in Her Own Voice".

Now, for the first set of songs of the beautiful album ...

Kannavaari Kalalu (1974) - A Telugu Film

This is the Telugu version of the super hit "Aradhana (1969)" in Hindi. It was also a hit in Telugu. The songs are not copies but essentially are of similar situational ones. "Roop Tera Mastana" in Telugu, though is not a copy of the Hindi version, was done well by Balu. That song is "Cheli Choopulona".

Here are the songs from this movie ...

Chanda Hai Tu Mera Suraj Hai tu - Lata Mangeshkar - Sad part
time 2:06/Bitrate 128kbps

For me, singing sad songs often has a way of healing a situation. It gets the hurt out in the open into the light, out of the darkness.
