(Waheeda) 12 O'Clock (1958)
Here is another delightful romp from the great maestro O.P. Nayyar. Movie wasn't that great but not because of its music. It was just outstanding and even today, after 50 plus years, sounds great to listen to. Geetaji had five songs in it; three solos and two duets. As usual her voice is just mesmerizing. These songs cast a spell on you. One of my very very favorite songs of Geetaji is "Kaisa Jaadoo Balam Tu Ne Daara". With this song in her sublimely beautiful voice, Geetaji grips your soul and controls your senses. You just totally surrender to the way she melodiously modulates her voice in gliding through this song with gay abandon. You're helplessly consumed with its passion and beauty. Here is Geetaji's always dependable magic of her voice combined with OP's beautiful tunes ... This post has been edited by swarapriya: Aug 11 2009, 11:11 AM Attached image(s) ![]() |

(Zeenat) Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973)
Here is a beautiful musical from RD. Kishoreda has some beautiful numbers in it. But one of my most favorite songs is the duet by Asha & Rafi, the beautiful "Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko". I was attendng one of Ashaji's concert where she told the audience how this song evolved. RD was thinking about this song for some time in his mind and suddenly he knew what to do. He had Asha accompany him to bazaar to buy some wine glasses. He returned to the studios and created this tune using clinking of the glass with a spoon and had Asha and Rafiji sing the song as its accompaniment. That is how creative minds work. Nasir Hussain, who directed this movie, originally offered this role to Asha Parekh, his favorite star. But Asha was on the verge of going on a tour of USA with her dancing troupe so has to decline it. Zeenat readily accepted the offer to take her place. One of the delightful music piece is that long number performed by the trio Asha, Kishore and RD, "Aap Ke Kamre Mein Koi Rehta Hai". Inspite of its length, the song entertains. Of course, both title songs also were very popular. This movie was made into Telugu as "Anaadammula Anubandham". I will upload songs from it in this section following "Yaadon Ki" songs. Now for the songs from this beautiful album ... This post has been edited by swarapriya: Aug 12 2009, 03:11 AM Attached image(s) ![]() |

Annadammula Anubandham (1975) - A Telugu Movie
This Telugu movie was based on the Hindi hit "Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973)". It was led by N.T. Rama Rao (in Dharmendra's role). The music was composed by Chakravarti who had three of his own tunes but borrowed three tunes from the Hindi version. Both "Aanaati Hidayaala" songs were based on the "Yaadon Ki Baaraat" title song tunes. "Gulaabi Puvvai Navvaali" was based on the "Chura Liya" tune. I haven't seen the Telugu movie but if my guess is correct, the younger brother was played by the actor Bala Krishna, who actually is the son of NTR (who plays the older brother in this movie). This may be the first movie where the real life father and son played as brothers ... Here are the songs ... Attached image(s) ![]() |

(Asha) Ghunghat (1960)
This movie was based on Tagore's famous novel "The Wreck". It was made earlier in Tamil and Telugu, both in 1956. Those films were directd by T. Prakasha Rao of "Sasural (1960)" fame. The Hindi version was directed by Ramanand Sagar, who became a household name with his "Ramayana" television series later on. Hindi version was a huge hit, thanks to the great music by Ravi. Madhubala, who richly deserved the Filmfare best actress award for her perormance in "Mughal-E-Azam (1960)" lost to Bina Rai in this movie. Rai's performance was really nothing to write home about. I will upload songs from the Telugu movie "Charana Daasi (1956)" after I upload these songs, in this section itself. Now for some really nice songs of "Ghunghat" ... Attached image(s) ![]() |

Charana Daasi (1956) - A Telugu Movie
This movie was based on Tagore's "The Wreck" novel. It boasted who is who of Telugu actors of those times. It has tons of songs, lots of comedy, and so much of emotional drama. Yet it wasn't the stupendous success the producer Shankara Reddy expected it to be. He has to wait for "Lava Kusha (1963)" for this to happen. In Tagore's story the movie revolves around a ship wreck. In both Tamil and Telugu versions it was replaced by a train accident. As a matter of factor, during the shooting of the movie there was a real train wreck in Ariyalur. The director Tatineni Prakasha Rao used that footage of the accident and integrated into the movie to blend into the story nicely. Both Tamil and Telugu versions had almost the same principal cast except the role NTR played in Telugu was played by Gemini Ganesh in Tamil. I am uploading all the songs from the Telugu movie here. These were ripped from a DVD. But the quality is quite good. I am missing names of the singers for most of the songs. If someone can help with this it will be great. Because of the number of songs, I am uploading them in back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ... Attached image(s) ![]() |

(Mala) Rangeen Raatein (1956)
These songs have been uploaded before in different threads. However, I am uploading them here again. Original contributor of these songs was Faizel ji. Thank you Faizel ji. If you look at the picture on the left in the table below you will see Chand Usmani with Geeta Bali in a man's "disguise". Apparently this was not a disguise but for some curious reason she was cast to act to play a man in this movie! The first instance of a man playing a woman dates way back to 1917, the silent era of the movies. In the movie "Lanka Dahan", the actor A. Solanki played both Rama and Sita! It was also the first dual role in a Hindi movie. Now for the songs ... This post has been edited by swarapriya: Aug 15 2009, 11:45 PM Attached image(s) ![]() |

"Rangeen raateN" came out around the time that Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali were
dating. And I think she wanted to be in the movie to be with him. The only option available was this man's role. So she did it. That is what I had heard. If it is true, I think it is a cute anecdote in a love story. This post has been edited by sangeetbhakt: Aug 16 2009, 08:46 AM |

Curiously, director went along with the plan too because Ms. Bali was no small actress at that time. Shammi was still a struggling actor. Geeta ji must have thrown a lot of weight to pull such things off. Cheers, Swarapriya |
