(Waheeda) Lamhe (1991)

Here is an unusual story, written by Honey Irani that was directed by Yash Chopra. Its central theme is about an adolescent (played by Anil) who falls in love with an older woman (Sridevi) only to see she marries someone else. Years pass by where the boy is a man now but the woman he loved passes away some time ago after giving birth to a girl. The girl grows up (Sridevi) and falls in love with Anil. But this complex yarn is interspersed with beautiful music provided by the duo Shiv & Hari. Also, bother Sridevi and Anil give commendable performances.

There is one scene in the film where the younger Sridevi dances in a rage, included in the first post. This one was lifted from the hit Hollywood movie "Flashdance" made in 1983 that starred an unknown Jennifer Beals. Nevertheless, Sridevi, an accomplished dancer herself does a great job with the "Moments of Rage".

Shiv & Hari has provided excellent music. They worked together in only a handful of movies and retired from the filmdom, seems like in haste. I am not sure why they haven't done more movies as they seem to have a different but melodious music making techniques because of their strength and expertise of classical music background.

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts from an original soundtrack bum. Here are the songs in the first post...

Concluding Songs from "Lamhe (1991)"...

Here are the rest of the songs from this beautiful album. I want to mention about Sudesh Bhosle who is a co-singer with Pamela Chopra (spouse of Yash) in the "Parody Song". I have seen him perform in few concert shows. He is an amazing talent. He can change his voice and imitate voices of many famous names. The proof is in this song itself.

Now for the songs...

(Zeenat) Bhopal Express (1999)

In the night of December 2, 1984, a leak of methyl isocyanate gas in the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant located in the city of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, India resulted in one of great disasters of tragic consequence in modern times. Nearly 4,000 people died in the wake of the immediate tragedy and another estimated 8,000 people died since then. It caused permanent disabilities to another 4,000 people. Another 40,000 people suffered partial or temporary injuries. An affidavit released by the government estimated that close to 600,000 people have suffered health problems of varying degrees of severity. Even though the American parent company settled the issue with the Government of India, it is evident that too little was done from either side for those affected.

The photo attached below shows the memorial erected in the honor of those who lost their lives in the gruesome tragedy.

Taking this backdrop the movie “Bhopal Express” explores how the tragedy affects a young couple that changes lives of many people. Directed by Mahesh Mathai (see his picture below) it has won many internal and international awards.

With this posting, the thread on Zeenat Aman comes to an end. We started her thread on June 9, 2009. After nearly 27 months, we covered most of her movies, over 70 in all.

The last movie Zeenat made before this was in 1989. She went into “retirement” but came back to appear in this film after a ten year lapse. She continues to make an occasional appearance in movies past 2000. She was in about 10 or so movies in 2000’s.

Now for the songs from this film…
