Hi Faraaj73
Some years ago there was a mention of some song and dance sequence in an earlier movie that was the inspiration for the dream song in Raj Kapoor's Awaara (Tere bina aag yeh chandni). I have been looking for that piece of information. If you or any of our members knows about that can you please post the information here or at least provide a link to the original article. Thanks. Harjinder

I don't know about an inspiration for "Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi" but this was Helen's filmi debut. She was in the gaggle of extras who danced in this dream sequence.

Hi Nandi
I did not know about this song being Helen's introduction to Bombay filmdom. Thanks for this rare bit of information. Now if some one could come up with the information about dream sequence in an earlier movie that was supposed to be the precursor of Awaara sequence. Harjinder

Here is another example of self-plagiarization. Generally an MD will repackage a song if it did not receive the desired accolades in its first incarnation, e.g., Theraa Dil Kahaan Hai (Chaandnee Chouk, Roshan,1955) which became a hit as Rahe Na Rahe (Mamthaa, Roshan, 1966). But S.N. Tripathi has recycled some of his hits also (e.g., Parvardigaar-e-aalam - Haathim Tai - 1956 recycled into Besahaaron Ke...Tootaa Vathan - Khudaa Kaa Bandaa - 1957). Here is one more example.

Song: Na Kisee Kee Aankh Kaa
Movie: Laal Qilaa
MD: S.N. Tripathi
Year: 1960
Singers: Rafi
Format: mp3
Bit Rate: 128 kpbs
Length: 3:12
My Rating of Music: 8/10

Its tempo has been quickened in

Song: Theraa Pyaar Mujhko
Movie: Been Kaa Jaadoo
MD: S.N. Tripathi
Year: 1963
Singers: Suman Kalyanpur
Format: mp3
Bit Rate: 128 kpbs
Length: 3:10
My Rating of Music: 7/10

Lataji's interview in Tehlaka.com

http://www.tehelka.com/story_main50.asp?fi...u081011Moon.asp

"Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi, a song composed by Shankar Jaikishan sahab for the film Awaara, was based on a popular Kulthum song Ala Balad El Mahboub from the film Wedad in 1936. The pleasure of singing Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi was totally different. When I discovered that it was actually based on Kulthum’s tune, I looked for and heard many of her songs with attention. I also remember that there was a respected Egyptian music composer, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, whose tunes inspired many Hindi film songs. I myself sang a popular song based on one of his tunes, composed by Naushad sahab, called Mera Salaam Le Jaa, Dil Ka Payaam Le Jaa from the film Udan Khatola."

The song is available at utube and many internet sites.

Hi Mr Sharma
Thanks for the information. As they say in America 'long time no see'. It's nice to see you back. I think I speak for many when I say we do appreciate your detailed input on various topics of interest in Hindi film world. I had some information about Shanker Jaikishan using an Arabic song tune for Awara song 'Ghar aaya mera pardesi ' from 'Tere bina aag yeh chandni' but did not have any details about it. Thanks for providing those.
My only wish is to have you, Mr. Dharamvir, and Mr. Urzung Khan back at this forum but as with many other happenings in life when interest in a topic wanes people move on. Thanks again for your detailed input. Harjinder

Hi
Only thing I can say about the singer is that he sounds a little bit like British (Welsh) singer Tom Jones. Harjinder

MD: S.D.Burman
Year: 1958
Singers: Asha
Format: mp3
Bit Rate: 128 kpbs

The stanzas (Antaras or Charanas) of this song are very similar to the refrain (Mukhdaa or Pallavi) of "Sway" which is the English version of a spanish song composed in 1953 by the Mexican composer, Pablo Beltrán Ruiz. "Sway" has been sung by several artistes, Dean Martin, Michael Bublé, Rosemary Clooney, etc. The Dean Martin version can be found at:
