Are you aware of a song called "Oh oh oh oh baby" from the same film sung by Geeta ji and Hemantda ? This song got Hemantda in trouble due to copy rights issues... Cheers Parag Parag-bhai, Could you kindly elaborate what sort of trouble related to copyright issues HK got into because of the 'oh baby' song? Is this trouble documented anywhere (magazine article, interview etc)? I know that the song's mukhda is inspired by 'O bernadine' but, I hadn't heard of this 'trouble with copyright issue' thing earlier. -Prithvi Parag I don't have this song and would like to know about this controversy too. Do provide the details. Regards Hildebrand Prithvi, HB I also dont know the exact details but I just read somewhere on net (or in some magazine years ago) that Hemantda was in some kind of trouble over the copyright issue of this song "Oh oh oh oh baby" from Police. Thanks HB for the song from Police..very melodious number. And mahesh..thanks for the song Oh baby...from Police. Interesting to read about the controversy regarding copy right. I learnt from another site about so many songs which were replicas of some western songs... ![]() "Bad artists copy. Great artists steal." -- Pablo Picasso American's didn't complain about copyright when they were stealing from Brits. and When Brits were stealing from Indians. For example Parcheesi is an American adaptation of the Indian Cross and Circle game Pachisi. Cotton Gin was rework of device used in India for hundreds of year. I can give more example if you don't know. R&D..I never meant what i said in a derogatory way...After all Americans doesnt have anything of thier own..not even a Culture. ![]() IMO, none of these contain an iota of truth and serious music lovers better refrain from repeating them while associating singers' names. Finally, Police('57) was not the first instance nor the last instance, when Hemant looked at another composer's tune for inspiration - and this is provable. -Prithvi simple logic would help in this case instead of relying on 50 year old gossip rumors. HMV is the copyright in this case. HK is just contract employee. He didn't get any royalty payment from it. Movie producer own the movies copyright. So HK cannot be sued for copyright infringement. Furthermore any infringement has to go to court litigation. Either money has to be exchanged or the offending material has to be withdrawn from the market. Unless that can be provided as proof instead of someone's memory of reading gossip magazine than it has to be taken with grain of salt. The important factor is to know whether a song has its roots in western song..and nothing else. Actually, We do know that every MD has taken inspiration from one or more western songs, which in no way belittle the Legendary Composers of that time. With the kind of work load and the tastes of Producers and Heroes coming in their way, a composer has a tough scene to manage. I got the information of the songs from here... http://www.itwofs.com/hindi-others.html which is a reputed site. You can see the english songs marked along the Hindi ones..and can download them..and listen to them . Legalities are not the concern here. And given today's scenario, where Rajesh Roshan shelled out 2 Crores...to stop a case being filed against the music of his film..and goes to press with that...We have come a long way in advertising about Films. I think the old timers would have settled it quite silently ..and in dignity. After silence that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.
