Has anyone seen the film? In the movie Shabana (who is dumb and writes poetry to escape her reality) imagines/sings the song (phirse aiyoo) when she falls in love with Sanjeev Kumar who is really in love with the more practical Sharmila Tagore... The movie is about a truck driver who rents a room in a small village from a family of four women... the mother(Waheeda Rehman) and her three daughters (Sharmila Tagore, Shabana Azmi and Kiran Vairale). A gem of a movie, it really has no plot, just derives its justification from the incredibly fascinating characters and the relationships between the four women and Sanjeev Kumar. The old woman, almost senile, wily about taking money to survive, the eldest just beyond the marriageable age, struggling under her responsibilities, harsh yet vulnerable, the middle one, dumb and ultra-sensitive, living in her own world, and the youngest, full of life and curious, just emerging out of her teens, dangerously veering towards the very world of "Nautanki" that her mother had left behind with such bitter memories. Gulzar seems to have a fascination with names... or at least I am fascinated by names he chooses for his characters... The Eldest is "Nimki" (Sharmila Tagore) and middle one (Shabana) is "Mitthu" and the youngest one...as they ran out of flavours..."Chinki" . Waheeda Rehman is Jyoti(Jugni). I remember in Lekin too he has this beautiful name for his beautiful ghost... Reva... wonder what it means. Aage... movie dekho and please comment karo... "This isn't right, this isn't even wrong." Song is a feather in his cap. He didn't write many folk songs/songs based on folklores and tales earlier. Master ji ki chitthi (Kitaab) is a song of different genre. He gradually slipped into the mould of Versatile Lyricist. Good example. He tried to remain a poet always, though. (We are not including new songs in the discussion.)
