Muse & Music
Most film loving folks think that the music made for films from 50’s through 80’s represents golden age of music. This may be debatable. However, one thing is certain. Several great musicals emerged during this period and we saw the rise of many singing legends during this time. One way to take a closer look at the music of the Golden Age is to look into the period through the female stars who were popular in this time frame. Because it is just about impossible to cater for all the stars, I came to a conclusion that probably the following 12 stars will sufficiently represent movies that are part of this golden era. These are: Asha Parekh Hema Malini Mala Sinha Mumtaz Nutan Rekha Sadhana Saira Banu Sharmila Tagore Vyjayanti Mala Waheeda Rehman Zeenat Aman Others may come up with a different list. But for the music of the Golden Age I want to share with our fellow members these stars probably make a fair representation. Let us look at filmographies of these actresses and see if we can come to some conclusions. I will present the filmographies in the order listed above. |

(Hema) Jaaneman (1976)
With his chips down because of series of flops he produced, Dev was looking for a vehicle that could turn around his career. He didn't need to go too far. He found it in his own hit and trend setting movie "Taxi Driver" made in 1954. He hired elder brother Chetan, who also was the director of "Taxi Driver", to direct "Jaaneman". When he approached Hema to be his leading lady, she agreed. It was reported in the press that out of respect for her costar Dev who fell on lean times, Hema either didn't take any money for her role or she took only nominal amount. All said and done, in the end when the movie was released, it enjoyed only a limited success. Here are the songs from this film... Attached image(s) |

(Mumtaz) Baghdad ki Raatein (1967) The music for this album was composed by Dlip Dholakiya, a long time assistant to the music director Chitragupt. Unfortunately I have only one song from this album, a rollicking jaunt by ever ebullient Geetaji. The missing songs are listed in red italics in the table below. Please kindly share these songs if you can. Thanks. Here is the only song I have... The songs that you have listed are from Baghdad Ki Raatein (1962) and it did not star Mumtaz. The film in which Mumtaz starred was in fact Arabian Nights (1967). It was also called as Baghdad Ki Raaten and Panic in Baghdad. It had music by Lala Sattar and here is a song listing: 1. Dekho Ji Dil Gaya Dil Gaya - Asha 2. Husn Ke Jalwe Hain Jawaan Mehfil Mein - Asha 3. Lafzon Mein Bayaan Ho Husn Tera - Rafi Manna De 4. Maujon Mein Chhupa Sahil - Rafi Manna De 5. Sau Sau Phere Teri Gali Mein - Lata Kamal Barot 6. Aarzoo Hai Bas Ek - Asha Aditya My Blog - http://urgetofly.blogspirit.com

(Vyjayanti) Do Dilon Ki Dastan (1966)
This is a typical OP album with lots of foot tapping music where the rhythm rules the roost. When you listen to these songs you will know why OP was rightfully called the "King of Rhythm". Here are the songs... Attached image(s) |
