On Monday, March 21, 2005, Muralitharan entered into wedlock with a Chennai-based business executive Madhimalar in the presence of a large gathering, including several stars from the cricket world.

The Lankan bowler is seen with his 24-year-old bride Madhimalar. The high-profile wedding was attended by former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga, Sanat Jayasurya and Chaminda Vass and former Indian players Robin Singh, T A Sekar and Aashish Kapoor. Muralitharan is the second highest Test wicket-taker with 532 wickets in 91 matches. He is also an Ambassador of Peace of the United Nations.

Muralitharan and his bride performmarriage rituals during the wedding ceremony. His parents hail from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu and the bowler, who was born in Kandy, Sri Lanka, has a hotel business there.

Muralitharan is with his bride Madhimalar and an unidentified guest at the ceremony. The 32-year-old Sri Lankan married in the traditional South Indian religious manner, amidst chanting of hymns, at a colourful function at the sprawling Rani Meyammai Hall in Chennai. Madhimalar helps her mother Dr Nithhya Ramamurthy in their family-run Malar Hospitals. The marriage was arranged by the couple's parents during the first week of December.
