Full Version: PLAYBACK SINGERS
Is there a website dedicated to only playback singers. having news and updates on how they are doing and songs they have currently recorded.
It would also be nice to read on how former playback singers are doing who are not being given a chance in the film world and if they are recording private albums etc.

Most of them have retired and taken a back seat except for the Mangeshkar sisters.
Mannadey who is in Bangalore does perform live shows once in a way.
We do not know about the other singers.

Bhupinder is still around and sings mainly on private album with his wife.
Shabbir Kumar and Mohd.Aziz have been replaced by Sonu Nigam. They don’t seem to be getting any film offers, the last one for Shabbir I think was ‘Dil Dhoondta Hai’ and Mohd Aziz in Amithabh’s ‘Rishtaa’
Both Shabbir and Mohd tours round the world with shows titled ‘Tribute to Rafi’
And what happened to Anwar (don’t know his second name), I thought he would have achieved so much fame as IMO he came close to Rafisaab.

Kavita Krishnamurthy I guess is the highest paid playback vocalist. Don't know about male vocalist. May be Sonu these days.
How do you think it works with the playback singers, do they have some sort of singer’s association.
Do they up they fee according to how busy they get ?
And could it be one reason the offers starts slowing down with singers raising their fees extortionately or their ego takes over.

I don't know how Pradeepji you came to know the above. But since you have mentioned it, I can't resist to share my experiene I had some 5 years back.
Anwarsaab and another gentlemen from Navy incidentally were my co-passengers in 2 AC compartment during my journey by night train from Mumbai to Hyderabad. I immediately recognised that the gentlemen in blue kurta pajama was none other than singer Anwar.
As we were only 3 of us in our cubicle and since I am Rafisaab's fan, I started chatting with Anwar about Rafisaab, how great he was not only as playback singer but a human being etc. Surprisingly, some how I did not find him interested to talk or listen about Rafisaab as also any fascination being compared as Rafisaab's voice.
He was having non-veg food for dinner accompanied with the drink (hard) he brought with him. I was no company for him both for the foodstuff as well as drink but fellow passenger from the Navy could give him the company he needed. We did not have much conversation thereafter all through till we reached Hyderabad next afternoon. He was going for some programme in Hyderabad. However, haven't heard of him or his programms anywhere thereafter.
Driving home the point is, though having good voice, Anwar could not pursue playback singing to his potential. The above quoted statement may be one of the reasons for the same. Another one, may be he did not like to be compared himself with Rafisaab.
Incidentally, if I am not wrong, Anwar is Asha Sachdev's (actress) brother.

I recently watched the serial ‘Gul aur sanobar ‘and he was singing the title song.
Ye gul aur sanobar ki hai daastaan……
Very much in Rafisaab’s style.

What happened to Anwar,he was very close to Rafi sab,even comparatively better than Sonu. He surfaced when Rafi saab was alive.. He failed probably due to his superlative ego. Just listen to these songs.HOW CLOSE HE WAS TO RAFI.

i spoke to anwar very recently, his working on an private album.
but if the truth be told- his careers long finished.
sadly drink destroyed anwars career.

atleast they cud pronounce the words properly.

ur quite right amit kumar is a true genius full of unlimited talents.
the only reason his not singing & ruling the industry.
is because he refuses to beg the elite or join parties.
otherwise he has everything & much more to dominate easily.
amit kumar used to sing the songs of today 20 years ago.

the similarities were the same.
they were all rafi rip offs but...
the difference is shabbir kumar had a poular filmi voice at the right time.
mohd.aziz took over simply because he had the most powerful vocals of the three &
anwar sounded the closest to the great rafi sahaab but sadly cudnt stop drinking.

just to continue with what u said yaar.
mohd. rafi & kishore kumar arent legends theyre beyond that they are institutions the basis &
platform for all male singers that we had today.
they sing a whole track on their own (& did successfully many many times.)
but pls give great credit to singers like shabbir kumar sahaab, anwar & mohd. aziz.
personally i prefer all three over sonu nigam but shabbir kumar was special.
just my opinion yaar.
