How times change!
Once we had emperors and kings, bards and minstrels swooning over the deadly beauty of Cleopatra. Now we've the coins depicting ugly Cleopatra.
I dont believe that the coins were very carefully crafted. It is also possible that with the passage of time, i.e. centuries, Cleopatra's face on the coins may have defaced. I prefer the Elizabethian Cleopatra any time.
