Bash I like only two movies of Mithunda! His very first one, Mrigyaa 1976 (a Mrinal Sen movie) and Sheesha - 1986 (with Moon Moon Sen and Mallika Sarabhai).

The rest were the usual commercial movies. His dancing ability in the movies probably is what that made the movies click.

His style of talking and dancing set the trend in 80's he he he!

The biggest surprise of my life was my stay in Belgaum. That town was Mithun-crazy, I tell you!!
Yenny movie of MC would run to packed houses!! Amitabh, Shammi and Mithun could have ruled the town.
Nimii
Any particular reason for the craze Mandrake?
Mandrake

Nimii

yeah, i heard about that. one of my friends told me: "u will be chocked when u will see the mithun craze
in villages. if in any festiv, the theatres don't show a mithun movie there will be a fight for sure ...
laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

here r few things about mithun:

1. name: gouranga chakraborty ( born. June 16, 1947 )

2. graduated from film and television institute of india, pune. ( i never knew that )

3. first movie "mrigaya" in 1976 by mrinal sen.

4. filmfare awards for: jallad and agneepath ( supporting actor to mithun, best actor to amitabh bachchan )

5. won 3 national awards for the movies: mrigaya, taharader katha and ramakrishna

6. he left mainstream bollywood movies and started doing movies for developing his own movies.
these movies were mainly targeted towards people whose social status can at best be described as modest.

i think this is one of the reasons behind mithun craze in villages and towns. ooty is one such example
where he owns an entire series of hotels and people there are just crazy about him.

Aaright Bash.

I personally liked Mithun more when he performed the poor down trodden bichara gharib village type person - like Agneepath. I have to say, I've only partly watched may be, a couple of his films.

I recently watched a little bit of Mithuns Bengoli village based film on Zee Cinema - bit I watched was enjoyable - when peforming serious roles - A CLASS ACT.

I however still have nightmares about Mithun attempting Michael Jacksons Thriller dance routine, wearing sparkly white (pimp/elvis style) skin tight clothes, cowboy boots and huge sunglasses ("Goggles"), reminded me of Richard Pryor - more suitable for "Blue Oyster Bar", if you know what I mean excl.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Bash I admit I'm a bit biased - cos my family mostly only watched Big B, Dilip Kumar and Mehmood.

Same goes for my taste in music - family influence.

Take care.

no dnt Be silly yaar,

ur opinion is paramount cos its unique.

iNFACT- i think mithun was one the most under rated & acomplished actors of his generation.

some of his performances have been outstanding.

he was charimatic, hard working & comitted!

my only real critism of mithun wud be the fact he made a 100 0r 200 (l.o.l) more films than he shud have!

he was a true genuine, star hence ruling in the 80s.

look no further than mukul s. anands's...'agneepath 1990'.

p.s.

thats where i differ i never get influenced either by family or friends.

i just say & choose what i like regardless!

thanx yaar.

take care.

ok , when i was small kid in Afghanistan.........my cousin who was 5 years older than me , used to collect Methun's small photos .........he would draw all the cards stuff on the back of the photos........and he would play cards with that..........meanwhile, he had a big poster of mithun in his bedroom.........the one from "i'm a disco dancer" song..........he himself would sing this song too.........that's all i know about methun's fame in Afghanistan wink.gif

Dharmaan Khan
Mithun was a class act, i respect him for he was totally dedicated to what he did, no matter how big or small a film he was working in. there are some outstanding scenes from his films like example, the scene in "ghulaami" where he kills bairav singh in the desert, and is brought in to the cop shop where he faces naseeruddin shah and bairav singhs brothers and naseeruddin shah asks him " kya yeh sach hai ke tum ne bairav singh ka khoon kiya hai"? to which mithun replies "maine bairav singh ka khoon nahin kiya, woh ladaai main mara gaya, kyonke pehla vaar usne kiya tha" the dialogue delivery of mithun in this scene is just amazing as the dialogue requires it, not lot of actors really think about their dialogue delivery, they just blirt it out. and his acting on the scene where he ties the jooda on a dead anita raaj, with zeehal e maskeen song (slow version sung by an uncredited Anuradha) playing in the background, one of my all time best scenes from hindi cinema.

and of course agneepath, the dialogues are amazing such as: "main apni maa ka ACHA beta hoon"
and "hamara nuskaan 325 rupees" ,wonderfull!!!

and many many more, To name a few PARIVAAR-1987, some amazing scenes in that, PYAR KA MANDIR-1988, Boxer 1984 (the confrontational scenes with Danny are just amazing), i could go on and on, lekin aaj ke liye itna hi kaafi hai.

ohmy.gif OK - How many filmfare awards did he win over his bright career? Was he ever a "SuperStar" like Dilip\Rajesh\Amitabh and Shah Rukh khan? He never made it big as a top male actor...That's why i rank him as a good B grade Actor. Understand Bash Bhai??? lol

salaam mere bhai,
do u seriously think that winning awards makes a difference to the natural abilities of an actor, the awards (in any industry, bollywood or hollywood are the most biased thing ive come across) (take for example, martin scorsese, who hasnt won his best director oscar yet, despite making films, like raging bull, taxi driver, goodfellas, casino, the aviator, and how in the hell can u give an oscar to tom hanks for forest gump-1994, and overlook john travolta or bruce willis for pulp fiction) sorry thats my bit on the oscars biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
the same with indian awards, all the lavish films will get the awards and films look shool and sehar will be overlooked.

and most importantly, MITHUN was one name in the 80's who could carry a film on his own, just look at his solo starrers and u will know what i mean, his ratio of carrying a film on his own, compared to, anil kapoor, jackie shroff, sunny deol, sunjay dutt and even dharmendra and jeetendra in the 80's is much better than anyone's. another aspect, take out all mithuns films from 80's and see what u are left with??

anyway, i just wanna say that i am not a very big fan of Mithun, but u have to give credit where its due, he was in my opinion the man who carried bollywood from the 80's into the 90's.
Jay
I always liked films of Mithun Da.

Films like

*SAHHAS (1981)
*DISCO DANCER (1982)
*SUN SAJNA (1983)
*BAADAL (1985)
*KAUN? KAISEY?? (1983, Mithun als Sherlock Holmes tongue1.gif With Super hit of KK Aao mere paas)
*YAADON KI KASAM (1985)
*JAAG UTHA INSAAN (1984)
*DILWALA (1986)
*SURAKSHAA (1979)
*PYAAR JUKHTA NAHIN (1984)
*GURU (1989)
*ILAAKA (1989 He sang the song 'Kal se choodoonga main sharab' by himslef!)
*MUDDAT (1986)
*GHULAMI (1985)
*AAMNE SAAMNE (1982)
*WARDAT (1981)
*SHAUKEEN (1982)

Are films not 2 forget, nostalgia en good peformance.

1. sitaare to bahut hai, parantu vo sitaare jo kalaakaar bhi hai bahut kam hai.
mithun kalaakaar bhi hai aur sitaare bhi.

2. bhaaratiya chalachitra jagat mein "raashtria puraskaar" sarvasresht puraskaar maanaa jaataa hai.
aur jinhe ye puraskaar 3 baar mil chukaa hai unhe to achchhaa honaa hi padegaa.

that's called analysis. a person who loves movies and acting in general must know how to analyse the
concept and scenes. ( btw, i don't remember these movies ) in writing about few actors i always feel
difficulty because people will think i am a big fan of such actors, but no. i was never a mithun fan but
i remember how much i liked his movies pyaar jhuktaa nahi, disco dancer ( back to school days ).
he lost the stardom(if u second that) because of his movies like ***** and the movies that based on
middle class village lives. no surprise to see the village craze cause i have seen the same craze among
city people, craze about whom ? craze about dot dot dot ( i don't wanna name ) tongue1.gif tongue1.gif

ohmy.gif ohmy.gif i am surprised to see the name shahrukh khan here. however i liked yr choice dilip kumar, rajesh
khanna and amitabh bachchan. i guess srk is the biggest hype in indian cinema. that's the reason i never
like yash chopra, karan johar kind of people. they got awards in many movies that they didn't deserve.
remember sholay and deewar ? sholay was a sippy production and deewar was under yash banner ...
this yash chopra craze started right from there. huh !!! and again remember the movies pinjar and
kal ho naa ho ? manoj bajpayi didn't get the award but saif ali khan got it ...
now a days i don't care filmfare at all unless they give it to actors like amitabh bachchan, ajay devgan
and aamir khan. all are pefect. clap1.gif and hats off to them.

sorry, i didn't mean national award is flawless. wrong decisions and partiality is there. (for example:
saif ali khan bagged the national award for hum tum. i shouldn't comment on this because i don't
know the other nominations still i guess it was a wrong decision. saif ali's best performance i think is
omkara, let's see if he gets any award for it. i wish he will get something along with arshad warsi ...)
but it's less corrupted, most difficult and prestigious.

u are talking about awards. let me ask u, how many national award dilip kumar got ?
it's very hard for a bollywood actor to get this award because it's highly competitive. not only bollywood
movies, it welcomes all indian movies: north, south, east, west. actors like big b, ashok kumar,
naseeruddin shah, om puri, nana patekar, kamal hassan got this award. filmfare was one of my favorites
but after 90s i started ignoring it. u know the reason. award/stardom is not something that u can
consider when u talk about acting. how many awards manoj bajpayi, anupam kher got ? has "irfan khan"
got the stardom ? and has sushant singh ever been recognized. no, never ...
i like him too. i watched the movie matrubhoomi just for him. so, would u say they are 2nd class actors ?
arshad warsi has not got any award. why ? why people are not crazy about him ? what's wrong with him ?
i think there's something wrong with me and with indian audience

LOL I second SAJJAD Bhai .. Koi Shak!! Ayeeehhhhhhhhhh!!

b grade actor ? actor kaa grading skill se bantaa hai movies se nahi. ***** is a b grade movie,
may be most of his movies(after 90) are b grade(not because of sex but because of low budget),
as they say: only one movie is sufficient to show yr first class acting and he did it.
----------------
sorry for saying a lot. don't think it's a craze. it's something that i always do for someone who is often
underestimated and underrated like kay kay menon and shiny ahuja.
Nimii
Koi kuchh kahe I dont care, I like him wub.gif
Reeth
I have seen just one movie of his and that too very recently................a movie called "Shaukeen" by Hrishikesh mukherjee if i am not mistaken....a comedy with 3 lecherous old men out to have one final fling .............it was entertaining and good fun .........mithun and rati agnihotri play the young lovers , and i found Mithun very good, definitely better than the rest of the crowd....movie had a couple of catchy numbers by ashaa...
But the real scene stealers were the 3 old men played by ashok kumar, utpal dutt ( he is amazing )and i forget the name of the other actor, they were a riot............too too good..........

SALAAM SAJ SHAI,

honestly im really really surprised & totally shocked that an intelligent guy like u can say such silly & fictional things.

how many awards did mithun win- that was ur question yes?...

ok...

u tell me how many filmfare awards did the great mohd. rafi (the best male singer ever) win? .... i ll tell u- 6.

how many did kumar sanu win? i ll tell u- 5! (in a row too!)

so according to ur theory kumar sanu is as good if not better than mohd. rafi right?- (ur theory is totally off

the mark.)

how can u even try to put a man down who for information has won a national award in his first film & won

an best supporting award in agnipath against the big b?

u may not like him personally i totally understan.

why u put him down- with no real facts i dont understand.

anyway it was interesting although a little disappointing.

p.s.

anwar, shabbir kumar & mohd. aziz all 3 put together- throughout their careers NEVER won a single filmfare

award BETWEEN them so does that mean all

3 were rubbish & b-grade singers? (again according to logical thinking they were)

believe me a lot of people wud disagree with u brother.

ohmy.gif : ME NO SILLY angry.gif wacko.gif By the way, Rafi Saab won 6 filmfare awards. You have to win atleast 1 award to show that public cares abt ur talent....lol He was NOT even nominated for filmfare award tongue1.gif I am not a fan of Shah Rukh, but atleast he is famous....His concerts in western countries are extremely popular. Plus, Mithu's voice is kind of sissy ph34r.gif I'm not trying to put him down.. U r right abt Sanu. Bottom line, all singers that came after Rafi Saab\KK's death are ALL B or C grade singers.

ohmy.gif OK - How many filmfare awards did he win over his bright career? Was he ever a "SuperStar" like
Dilip\Rajesh\Amitabh and Shah Rukh khan? He never made it big as a top male actor...That's why i rank him
as a good B grade Actor. Understand Bash Bhai??? lol

ohmy.gif ohmy.gif i am surprised to see the name shahrukh khan here. however i liked yr choice dilip kumar, rajesh
khanna and amitabh bachchan. i guess srk is the biggest hype in indian cinema. that's the reason i never
like yash chopra, karan johar kind of people. they got awards in many movies that they didn't deserve.
remember sholay and deewar ? sholay was a sippy production and deewar was under yash banner ...
this yash chopra craze started right from there. huh !!! and again remember the movies pinjar and
kal ho naa ho ? manoj bajpayi didn't get the award but saif ali khan got it ...
now a days i don't care filmfare at all unless they give it to actors like amitabh bachchan, ajay devgan
and aamir khan. all are pefect. clap1.gif and hats off to them.

sorry, i didn't mean national award is flawless. wrong decisions and partiality is there. (for example:
saif ali khan bagged the national award for hum tum. i shouldn't comment on this because i don't
know the other nominations still i guess it was a wrong decision. saif ali's best performance i think is
omkara, let's see if he gets any award for it. i wish he will get something along with arshad warsi ...)
but it's less corrupted, most difficult and prestigious.

u are talking about awards. let me ask u, how many national award dilip kumar got ?
it's very hard for a bollywood actor to get this award because it's highly competitive. not only bollywood
movies, it welcomes all indian movies: north, south, east, west. actors like big b, ashok kumar,
naseeruddin shah, om puri, nana patekar, kamal hassan got this award. filmfare was one of my favorites
but after 90s i started ignoring it. u know the reason. award/stardom is not something that u can
consider when u talk about acting. how many awards manoj bajpayi, anupam kher got ? has "irfan khan"
got the stardom ? and has sushant singh ever been recognized. no, never ...
i like him too. i watched the movie matrubhoomi just for him. so, would u say they are 2nd class actors ?
arshad warsi has not got any award. why ? why people are not crazy about him ? what's wrong with him ?
i think there's something wrong with me and with indian audience

b grade actor ? actor kaa grading skill se bantaa hai movies se nahi. ***** is a b grade movie,
may be most of his movies(after 90) are b grade(not because of sex but because of low budget),
as they say: only one movie is sufficient to show yr first class acting and he did it.

sorry for saying a lot. don't think it's a craze. it's something that i always do for someone who is often

Nature Bhai Excellent reply. ! I am also a fan of Mithun ! I too remember having watched lot of mithun movies in my school time !

I tell you one reason why people dislike Mithun. Mithun is " now days" associated with B grade movies and poor class of society. people very easily forget his excellent past performance !

Chaahe jitna bhi koi inaam jeet le , chaahe uska past jitna bhi acha ho........log kabhi bhi aesi cheez ke saath assocaite hona nehi chahte jiski movies B grade banner ki ho ya fir jiski movies ko gareeb janta jayada pasand karti ho !

If Iam not wrong ...At one time Mithun was the highest tax payer in Hindi film industry !

One more artist having such image problem is "Altaf Raja". I am often teased for listening to songs of altaf just because lot of his fans are from lower class of society !.
If Iam not wrong he composes songs on his own. He is talented but its pity that people have such views for him !

His album was the largest selling album in the history of Indian musiic ! ( I think sonu's Deewana broke that or is it the opp??). just check his album " ja bewafa"(??) all songs are good .

SALAAM SAJ BHAI,

honestly im really really surprised & totally shocked that an intelligent guy like u can say such silly & fictional things.

how many awards did mithun win- that was ur question yes?...

ok...

u tell me how many filmfare awards did the great mohd. rafi (the best male singer ever) win? .... i ll tell u- 5.

how many did kumar sanu win? i ll tell u- 5!

(again according to logical thinking they were)

believe me a lot of people wud disagree with u brother.

take care.

BASH.

ohmy.gif : ME NO SILLY angry.gif wacko.gif By the way, Rafi Saab won 6 filmfare awards.

HONESTLY SAJ I CANT BELIEVE U MATE?

QUOTE(Dharmaan Khan @ Nov 3 2006, 02:57 AM) *

Mithun was a class act, i respect him for he was totally dedicated to what he did, no matter how big or small
a film he was working in. there are some outstanding scenes from his films like example, the scene in
"ghulaami" ...................................he ties the jooda on a dead anita raaj, with zeehal e maskeen
song (slow version sung by an uncredited Anuradha) playing in the background, one of my all time best
scenes from hindi cinema.

and of course agneepath, the dialogues are amazing such as: "main apni maa ka ACHA beta hoon"
and "hamara nuskaan 325 rupees" ,wonderfull!!!

and many many more, To name a few PARIVAAR-1987, some amazing scenes in that, PYAR KA
MANDIR-1988, Boxer 1984 (the confrontational scenes with Danny are just amazing), i could go on and on,
lekin aaj ke liye itna hi kaafi hai.

that's called analysis. a person who loves movies and acting in general must know how to analyse the
concept and scenes.

Couldn't locate it quickly on this thread, but did anybody refer to his martial arts skills?
He was, to my mind, the first actor whose martial arts moves looked authentic, like a guy who was trained, rather than the choreography of the fight-composer.

And I couldn't locate the award-films too. Mithun won the national award in his first hindi film (was it Mrigaya or Paanch or Hum Paanch?). He also won another national award somewhere in the late 80's or so with some film whose name escapes me - Dharam-granth or something? (I know the name might be verrry different).
Nimii
Mandrake that was Mrigya! He was too good in it wub.gif with Mamta Shankar

Dharam granth? Prem Granth you mean?
Mandrake
Prem-Granth?
I am not sure.
He is a rural biggie, dispensing justice where required...
I think he uses a bow and arrow in the film?
Nimii
Prem Pratigya - with Mad Dixit?

Ye lo check out which one it is. Imdb has a list of his movies - http://imdb.com/name/nm0149822/

can't figure out...was it Krantikaari?
Maybe googling will help.

Long hair, manikchand, tight jeans.

Ask me, my room mate from KLE was first day first show Mithun fan. I still remember he pulled me to watch Mithun moive in Heera and we sat on second Row. Jaadugar ji imagine Heera’s screen. I nearly sprained my neck. To top it off first few rows were wooden seats.

I am not a Mithun fan but I did watch his movies in college days. come to think of it, I would’t watch "aaj ka ravanraj" or stuff like that but will watch "Agneepath" any day. Surprisingly no one mentioned name of that movie. I had read some place that Amitabh had complimented Mithun, with flowers for his performance in Agneepath.

In my opinion he introduced Disco and tight jeans (Wranglers) to hindi movies.

As he said in Agneepath – Meri family ka batcha laugh.gif
