My brain is urdu-challenged. So I need to find a site which lists a song and then lists all the difficult words (urdu for me) and their meanings and then I can decide what the poet is trying to say. (In other words I dont want the whole meaning of the poem pushed on to me by pundits.) The drawback is, I am going to lose some of the finer points, but as I get better at urdu, I will be able to notice the subtlities.

TIA
Mandrake
NM, maybe I can try and help you some smile1.gif

If you post the words whose meaning you need, I'll try to post the meaning.

Will do?

Hi,

You could try www.urdupoetry.com. I found a page on just Sahir Ludhianvi poems:

http://www.urdupoetry.com/sahir.html

In addition to this there are a few Urdu-English online dictionaries, and one specifically for ghazals.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I already have bookmarked some urdu dictionaries
http://www.urduword.com/Home/index.cgi
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~navin/india/urdu.dictionary
http://www.ebazm.com/dictionary.htm

to name a few

I did look at urdupoetry.com but did not find sahir's page at that time, so thanks for pointing it out to me
(but it doesnt have the song I was looking for)

Thanks Mandrake, but my current needs have been met.
The song was chalo ek baar firse
The sticking line was
mere hamaraah bhii ruswaa_iiyaa.N hai mere maazii kii
tumhaare saath guzarii hu_ii raato.n ke saaye hai.

looking up words in urdu dictionary makes the process discontinuous and you cant enjoy the poem that way. So what urdu poetry page has done is what I want

Dear NM,

There is no words in these line which needs help of dictionery only thing required is 'understanding', & the 'understanding' is not available anywhere in this world, it comes out from your inner heart feeling.
[I suppose].

BTW the line you have mentioned is really sticking one.

Mere Hamraaah Bhii,
Ruswaaiiyan Hain Mere Maajhi Ki

Tumhaare Saath Bhii,
Gujri Huii Raaton Ke Saaye Hain.

As per my 'understanding' the meaning goes like this....

Maajhi = Naaiyaa chalaane wala, the dependable person, YOU.
Rusvaaii – Badnaami
Saaye = Yaaden.

Now the situation has come when we have to get apart , here is my way & there is your way.
Who will accompany me ? & who will be your companion ?

This is what Sahir has answered in his unique style….

Tum meri jivan naiyya ko chalaane wale maajhi they , jo tumhari rusvaaii huii hai wahi rusvaaiiyan ab meri hamrah hingi, (now onward I will live with it)
You will be also not live alone because..
Jo waqt hamne saath me gujaara hai uski yaaden ab thumhaare saath hamesaa rahengi.

Kindly let me know if you are convinced or not.

The meaning can be different in other angle also

Agreed, just knowing the meaning of the words is not sufficient. You have to get the feel

my take was:
my fellow traveller, the shadow of nights I spent with you is the infamy of my past.
Any other shaayars wanna correct us here? Mandrake?

NM Bhai

Years back the same topic & same discussion about the meaning of this particular line AND now again..
Phir Wahi Zindagi Ka Sawaal Aa Gayaa.

I couldn’t find any relative(duur ka rishtedaar) word of ‘Maaji’ .
What to do?
OK ‘Maaji’ ko ‘Maanjhi’ banaa detaa hoon tongue.gif
(I know it is not urdu word at all & Shair-E-Azam was having strongest grip on urdu literature)

Bhai NMji, zaraa apni gun down kar lo, I should be thankful to myself that I have not used the meaning of ‘maaji’ as Maaji (Mata ji) unsure.gif varna mere ghar wale mujhe sadak pe douda douda ke surf excel se meri acchi khaasi dhulaii karte.

BTW don’t worry , help is on the way & very soon our hassle will be over.

Cheers

Dear NMji,

Help arrived !

Our HFM Mr Inaam Nadeem has sent me PM resolving our hassle , ...

As per Nadeem Sahab...

"The correct word is 'Maazi' (not maaji), it means 'Past', 'Beeta huwa zamaana'.
Here is the simple translation of
'Mere Humraah Bhii Rusvaaiyaan Hain Mere Maazi Ki
Tumhaare Saath Bhii Guzri Huyii Raaton Ke Saaye Hain'

There are notorieties of my past with me, You too have a lot of stories of your past with you.

Atleast I am fully convinced now.

NMji, thanks to your hitch which has helped me to open very old nought .

Cheers
