I've attended: a few of Rafi-sahab, and one each of Kishore-da and Talat-sahab, while in India.

Unniji, please share more info about these, how many live shows in total have you attended and were they all in the US?, did you meet Rafisaab backstage in any of these shows ?

Thanks
Iqbal

Iqbal-bhai:

Among the legends, the only ones I saw/heard on stage in the USA were Lata-ji and Asha-ji. The other concerts I attended were all in Madras (Chennai).

I've attended at least four concerts by Rafi-sahab. Maybe five. I tend to sort them out in my mind by the venues: University Auditorium, Music Academy, Congress Exhibition Grounds, SIET college.

Mukesh-ji, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Suman Kalyanpur and Usha Khanna also appeared and sang at the SIET concerts held on two consecutive evenings, with Ameen Sayani as the compere.

I heard Talat-sahab at the Museum Theatre and Kishore-da at the Music Academy.

I consider myself fortunate in hear 'live' most of the male legends when they were in their prime in the 60's/70's. Unfortunately, by the time I heard Lata-ji and Asha-ji in the New York area, it was already the 80's and 90's when they did not have much by way of "current" songs.

In my next post in this thread, I shall recount some memories of Asha-ji's concert with Amit Kumar.

Thanks Unniji,

Just like to add a remark by Lataji in a Sony concert a few years back.

She said the following song I’m about to sing I was told ‘bahut cheap gaana gaaya’ and had a bad response by many people but the songs that are being churned out today make this song feel harmless and then she started singing with Usha

Chori chori o baake gori kabhi meri gali aaya karo

Iqbal-bhai;

It is interesting how in those days that song was considered "cheap". Another song that comes to mind is the Lata/CR duet "Shaam Dhaley Khidki Taley". Both are very popular, decades later. Along with the times, supposed "moral values" and perceptions have changed. In the 50's and 60's they had a different perspective. By today's yardstick they were very conservative!

Lata-ji reportedly refused to sing lines that she considered "vulgar" or suggestive. It has even been suggested that she was 'tricked' into singing "Mujhey Buddha Mil Gaya". There has been discussion in our forum if the word "nangi" was vulgar in a song sung by Rafi-sahab. Personally, I don't think it was, and gave the example of the same word used exquisitely in the beautiful Lata/Madan Mohan number 'Merey Ashkon Ka Gham Na Kar Ae Dil".

Even something "suggestive" can be conveyed in a subtle, poetic manner. For example, Asha-ji singing "Jahaan Tak Mahek Hai Mere Gaysuon Ke Chaley Aayiyey".

We could infact start a thread on the subject. In my opinion, the Mahendra Kapoor song "Aaj Ki Raat Nahin Shiqwey Shikayat Ke Liye" ranks among the most "sexy" songs in HFM with its eloquently suggestive lyrics, e.g.

"Har Gunah Aaj Muqaddas Hai Farishton Ki Tareh,
Kaanptey Haathon Ko Mil Jaaney Do Rishton Ki Tareh.
Aaj Milney Mein Na Uljhan Hai Na Ruswaayi Hai...."

Apni Zulfen Merey Shaaney Pe Bikhar Jaaney Do,
Is Haseen Raat Ko Kuchh Aur Nikhar Jaaney Do.
Subah Ne Aaj na Aaney Ki Qasam Khaayi Hai....".

Others that come to mind are "Aur Kuchh Daer Thehar" and "Abhi Tau Raat Baaki Hai", both sung by Rafi-sahab.

A few years back in a discussion the Kishoreda song came up as ‘suggestive’,

Females : Mujhko mukhko mujko, petrol bharo jaldi karo

Kishoreda : Petrol bhi denge tail bhi denge dhakkan khol ke rakhna

Since they have no sure formula for success, film-makers become copy-cats. I remember, after the success of the film 'BOBBY", there were several "teeny-bopper" movies. Similarly, the popularity of the song "Chholi Ke Peechhe" was followed by a lot of vulgar songs. Fortunately, that trend died. Now the visuals and 'item' numbers have taken over! tongue.gif Someone said recently that what Bindu used to portray is being done by the heroines now.

Yes, there were many double-meaning songs in the 80’s and gradually phased out.

When you listen to this for the first time, the reason why he was the Original Great One becomes clearer. After you listen to it the second time, it remains with you forever.

Iss Bhajan ke bolon par bhi gaur keejiye.

Janam Maran Ka Meyl Hai Sapna Yeh Sapna Bisra De

The Original Soulful One and the Nightingale. If this lion could rule foreign lands with such ease, you can only imagine his stature in his native forest.

What a meeTha gaana. Waah. And such a good recording as well.
The film is "Naya aadmi", the year is 1956. Music is by the titans
of Tamil cinema Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy.
Thanx zippoo.
