(NTR) Rechukka (1954)

Ghantasala Balaramayya, who made many hit films and the man who introduced Nageshwara Rao in “Seetha Rama Jananam” in 1942 wrote the story and was producing and directing this movie. But he passed away with only a quarter of the movie completed. His son Krishna Murthy took over the reins and signed P. Pullayya to finish the rest of the movie. Pullayya not only agreed to direct the rest of the movie but also invested his own money into the production when the producer ran into financial problems. The movie was based on a 1951 Hollywood hit, “The Prince Who Was a Thief”, that starred Tony Curtis in the lead role.

“Rechukka” introduced a new heroine to the Telugu screen. Pramila, who played the princess, was a daughter of the famous Raghupathi Venkayya Naidu who was a photographer, film producer and director. He was mainly active during the silent film era. Pramila later changed her name to Devika and acted in a number of Telugu and Tamil films.

“Rechukka” when it was released became a hit with several songs from it becoming popular. It was later made in Tamil as “Nattutara”. The Tamil film also was a hit.

I am uploading songs from this album from a DVD. The quality of these songs is better than average. Here are these…

(NTR) Raju-Peda (1954)

This movie was based on an English film “The Prince and the Pauper” which itself was based on the novel of the same name written by the great American humorist and novelist Mark Twain. The book was published in 1881 and was made into movies and plays many a number of times. It was also published as a comic book in 1946.

The Telugu film is almost a carbon copy of the 1937 version of the film including the funny looking wardrobe worn by the royalty. Many variations of the story were filmed in all languages, with some adapted to current social environments. Most notable among these are “The Parent Trap” made by Walt Disney in 1961 and “Trading Places” made in 1983. Disney’s picture was made in most of the Indian languages, as “Letha Manasulu” in Telugu in 1966 and “Do Kaliyan” in 1968 in Hindi. The Telugu film “Iddaru Mithrulu” made in 1961 also borrowed heavily from the Twain novel.

“Raju-Peda” with all its stellar cast did only an average business. Interestingly it is Relangi, the comedian, who played the role of a soldier, a champion of the poor and not Rama Rao as one expects. In the English version Earl Flynn played the role Relangi played. Rama Rao played here as a petty thief who is an abusive husband and father. His role was very limited, may be about 15 minutes, less than that of Relangi. But playing an offbeat role, Rao performed brilliantly. The movie actually belonged to the child artiste Master Sudhakar who played the roles of both the prince and the pauper. He has most of the screen time, nearly 80% of it. That left for other veteran actors not much scope. Ranga Rao, a great actor he was, kind of disappointing in the role of the king.

Does anyone know what happened to Master Sudhakar? I would like to know more about him if someone can elaborate on his whereabouts and his career after this movie.

I am uploading songs from this film taken from a DVD in two back-to-back posts. The audio quality is passable. Unfortunately I don’t have details of the singers for many of the songs. Please help fill the gaps if you can. Thanks.

Now for the songs in the first post…

(NTR) Vaddante Dabbu (1954)

This movie produced by H.M. Reddy was based on a Marathi play written by G.D. Mudugulkar. Mudugulkar became well known when Shantaram made his internationally acclaimed “Do Aankhen Barah Haath”, released in 1957, was based on his story.

In 1988 a movie with the similar theme to this Telugu film, “Maalamaal”, with Naseeruddin Shah was made. “Vaddante Dabbu” was also remade in Telugu as “Baabaai Abbaai” in 1984 with Rama Rao’s son Bala Krishna as the hero.

The songs of this film were ripped from a DVD. Both the picture quality and the sound quality of the DVD were terrible with lots of footage missing. On the top of it, the DVD contained only five songs. There are at least three more songs, I believe, were there in the original film version.

I tried to clean up the audio as much as I could but there are still some skips that I couldn’t get rid of. My apologies for the poor quality of some of the songs. The table below lists missing songs shown in red italics. If anyone of you have these missing songs or better quality songs, please share. Thanks.

Now for the five songs from this album…
