(Amitabh) Shatranj ke Khilari (1977)
This is the only film Satyajit Ray directed in Hindi. It was based on a short story by Munshi Premchand. The film had dialogues in Urdu and English. English dialogues were written by Ray himself. Besides co-writing the screenplay and composing its music, Ray also directed the movie. The movie is set in 1856 before the eve of the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Its focus is on the annexation of the state of Awadh by the British while the rulers offer virtually no resistance. Ray wanted to offer Amitabh a role in the movie but couldn’t find anything suitable for him. Instead he used Amitabh’s voice to narrate the flow of the story of the movie. The movie won several awards for Ray. It won for Saeed Jaffrey Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, the Filmfare Critics Award for the Best Movie and the Filmfare Best Director Award for Ray. It won the National Award as the Best Hindi film and also the National Award as the Best Color film. It was nominated for the Golden Bear Award for Best Film at the 28th Berlin International Film Festival. Ray who generally made films on shoe string budgets was “extravagant” with “”Khilari”. It cost him nearly four times as much to make this film as compared to his other movies. Even at this, the budget of the film was about half to one-third of the regular commercial Hindi films of those times. Interestingly Ray shot the movie during the period when Mrs. Gandhi had “Emergency” rule in India during 1975 to 1977. All the principles involved delivered fine performances. Amjad Khan as the king showed that he was not only a great versatile and fine actor but a good singer too. He sang a couple of songs in the film. Here is a word or two about the songs. Songs in Post 1 are from a remastered 45 RPM Vinyl. I got this through a friend of mine. Apparently only a few of these records were pressed. Most of these songs are not in the DVD. The ones that are present in the DVD are of lesser duration than the the record version. I am enclosing front and back sides of images of this record below. Sorry, the image isn’t that clear. I was looking for songs from this film for some time. Apparently they were uploaded here in the Forum some months back but I missed them. I found a couple on "You Tube" that I am including here. It seems like there are a whole bunch I am missing. These are shown in red italics in the table below. Requesting members to share these songs if they can with the caution that some of these may overlap the two songs I am uploading here. Thank you very much. (Manoj) Painter Babu (1983)
Manoj produced this movie starring his brother Rajiv. I am not sure how many movies he was in and this movie certainly didn't help his career either. Some of the songs from this film are not bad but post "Kranti (1981)" anything Manoj involved in (films-wise) was a failure. Except for two all songs in this album are from an MP3 album. They are of excellent quality. The other two songs obtained from YouTube are of average to poor quality. Here are the songs...
