(Amitabh) Kabhi Kabhie (1976)

This movie was inspired by Sahir’s poem. Yash Chopra, who produced and directed the movie, collaborated with Sahir in many successful movies. The story of the film is credited to Pamela Chopra, wife of Yash.

The film’s story got readied during 1973 when Yash was making “Daag” in which Rakhee was a costar. Chopra had a tentative agreement for her to appear in the planned production of “Kabhi Kabhie” for which she readily agreed. But in the three years from the time she agreed to appear in the movie until the movie was ready to go into production, Rakhee got married to the famous poet Gulzarji. It was Gulzarji’s wish for Rakhee to retire from the films altogether. It took all the persuasion form Yash to convince Gulzar Saab to let Rakhee be allowed to appear in the film. Gulzarji eventually relented.

This film was one of the last films to be shot in beautiful Kashmir. The scenic splendor of the natural beauty of the valley adds another dimension to the movie.

But this film belonged to the music director Khayyamji and the lyricist Sahir Saab. If in “Phir Subah Hogi (1958)” they combined their talents to create songs of pathos, dejection, despair, delusion, and eventual hope, in this film it was all about love and laughter. The poet just lets the imagination fly composing these beautiful and youthful songs. Sahir and Khayyam worked in less than 10 movies (six I know of) and of them three were for Yash.

Most of the songs from “Kabhi Kabhie” became very popular with standouts being both versions of the title track. Also, both versions of the solos by Mukeshji are simply outstanding. Lataji adds a couple of beautiful solos of her own to the list. Then there are songs by Kishoreda, a solo and two duets to complete the list.

“Kabhi Kabhie” was quite a departure for Amitabh who for the first time exhibited a romantic side as part of his histrionics. Most of Amitabh’s previous successes as a hero usually revolved around the image of an angry young man.

The film was nominated for nine Filmfare awards in various categories. It walked away with four; for the Best Music (Khayyam), the Best Lyrics (Sahir Ludhianvi), the Best Male Playback Singer (Mukesh), and the Best Screenplay (Sagar Sarhadi).

I am uploading songs of this film from an original soundtrack album in three back-to-back posts. The first post also contains a couple of specials. One is the title track performed by Lata and Mukesh's son, Nitin Mukesh. This was recorded live in 1982. The other special is also the same song. This one has beautiful introduction by Yash Chopra. It is taken from the album "Legends: Mukesh - The Soulful Voice (CD 5)".

(Dharmendra) Khamoshi (1969)

Here is one of my favorite films. It is probably one of the finest movies ever made in Hindi. With a great performance by Waheeda and a haunting score by Hemantda, the movie is close to a masterpiece in filmmaking. Many of the songs from this movie just linger on and on even after many listenings.

Gulzarji wrote some outstanding lyrics for the film. It has only five songs but all of them are very beautiful. Particularly, Hemantda's song "Tum Pukar Lo" with the melancholic voice that resonates with deep feelings gives one a shatteringly helpless experience. In the movie this was filmed on Dharmendra. It reminds another outstanding song Hemantda sang for Dharmendra in “Anupama (1966)”, “Ya Dil Ki Suno”, also composed by Hemantda. Then there is Kishoreda's beautiful song "Woh Shaam Kuchh Ajeeb Thi". This and Hemantda's songs are my personal favorites from this movie. Also, Lataji's number, "Humne Dekha Hai" is not far behind these songs.

This movie originally was made in Bengali. "Deep Jwele Jai", made in 1959, starred Suchitra Sen in the lead and had the music composed by Hemantda. That movie is now considered a classic.

Incidentally, this film also was made in Telugu as "Chivaraku Migiledi". This 1961 film starred the greatest Telugu film actress Savitri, who gave performance of her lifetime.

Sometime back there were plans to make this film in English. It was to star Jennifer Aniston, who became popular starring in a TV sitcom called "Friends". But the buzz about the remake has died down. Seems like the idea of remaking the movie is either scrapped or in the back burners, at least for now.

I am including several specials in this post. Abhijeet's version of "Tum Pukaar Lo" is from the album "Salute to Legends". The same song with Mannada's intro is also included. This is taken from the album "Legends: Hemant Kumar - The Singer-Composer (CD 4)". Next I am including Amit's version of "Woh Shaam". The same song, Lata's version, is also included.

Swarapriya sis,just one thing.The tune of tum pukar lo is not the same as ei raat tomar amar of Deep Jele Jai film.The hindi version of ei raat tomar amar is the song yeh nayan dare dare from Kohra(1964),sung and composed by Hemant Kumar.
