(Raaj) Oonche Log (1965)

During his illustrious career Chitraguptji gave some fine music to many a films. Yet it seems like he never got his proper due. True he did give music to many B-grade movies but even there he gave A-grade music.

This movie was based on a Tamil hit the name of which I am not sure of. It was written by the venerable K. Balachander, who became popular with the Hindi film audience with the movie he directed for L.V. Prasad's endearing drama "Ek Duuje Ke Liye" in 1981. Balachander also directed many classics of Tamil cinema and to his credit has made well over 100 movies. An amazing achievement.

Most of the songs from this album are just marvelous. Every song is a sheer joy. My favorite of the album is Lata's solo "Haaye Re Tere Chanchal Nainwa". Here is this and other equally melodious songs from this album ...

(Rajendra) Sangam (1964)

This movie is an example of the magic of Raj Kapoor. He takes a hackneyed and an ordinary story and turns it into a blockbuster. It had all the glitter and luster but no warmth to show for. It was photographed in dazzling Technicolor. It was shot in various locations in Europe starting a trend in Hindi movies that is in vogue today. It had some magnificent music by the incomparable duo Shankar & Jaikishan. It had a pretty lady in the lead role. You mix all this into a potion and that spells movie magic.

Raj Kapoor waited to make this movie apparently for a long time. When he decided to make it, he had Dilip Kumar in mind as part of the love triangle. Dilip didn't forget what happened with Mehboob Khan's "Andaz (1949)". Also, Vyjayanti Mala who was one of Dilip’s favorite heroines, was slowly drifting away from him. Raj recognizing this immediately had her sign to play his leading lady in the movie. The net result was that Dilip decided to not accept the offer. The role eventually went to Rajendra Kumar.

Raj earlier starred with Vyjayanti in “Nazrana (1961)” which enjoyed only a limited success. But opposite Vyjayanti’s youthful looking figure, Raj looked old (ironically the hit song from this movie itself “Main Kaa Karoon Raam Mujhe Buddha Mil Gaya” sounds so appropriate here), completely out of shape and even appeared tired in some of the scenes. But there was so much gloss over the product that people really didn’t get to see what is all that litter beneath all that shiny glitter.

Continuing With Several Specials of Songs from "Sangam (1964)" ...

I am uplaoding in this post several specials. I am including a version of "Dost Dost" with an introduction by Yash Chopra who is very envious of Raj's cinematic skills. This is taken from the album "Legends: Raj Kapoor - The Showman (CD4)". Then I am including a version of "Mere Mann" with a great introduction by Raj Kapoor himself. Here he talks about how Shailendraji wrote the song. This one is also taken from the album "Legends: Raj Kapoor - The Showman (CD4)". Finally I am including a version song of "O Mere Sanam" with a glowing introduction by Vyjayanti Mala. In this she is all praise of Raj Kapoor the film maker. This one is also taken from the album "Legends: Raj Kapoor - The Showman (CD4)".

(Sunil) Amrapali (1966)

This historic drama seemed like all the right things going for it, but was a commercial failure. Vyjayanti Mala was stunningly photographed and I don't think she ever looked this beautiful. She had a chance to display her dancing skills to the fullest, and she does this magnificently. Then there was the unforgettably melodious music of Shankar & Jaikishan. One magnificent score. Very rarely the music director duo strayed away from social dramas to score music for period dramas , Sohrab Modi's "Raj Hath (1956)" comes immediately to mind, but this didn't change a thing for them. Their score was absolutely brilliant and stood the test of time. It is considered today as one of their finest works. Vyjayanti Mala thought this movie was going to be a super hit and when it didn't do well at the box office she was personally disappointed. Later after retiring from the movies, she seriously thought of remaking the movie with Madhuri Dixit playing the lead role. I am not sure what happened but the plans were abandoned.

Lata has four solos in this film. All of them are just superbly mellifluous and are simply sweet treasures. Even though they all are very good, I have a personal favorite. The song is "Neel Gagan Ki Chhaaon Mein". A superbly rendered song with Lataji's singing prowess in full display where she modulates her voice so magnificently. An unforgettable listening experience.

(Amitabh) Chhoti Si Baat (1975)

Basu Chatterjee directed this nice little comedy that gave name recognition to Amol Palekar who went on to make several movies repeating almost the same character successfully over and over again in several comedies. The film itself was based on a 1960 British comedy “School for Scoundrels or How to Win Without Actually Cheating!”. It was remade in 2006. In 1970s several successful TV shows appeared. The story was based on a book by the British author Stephen Potter who scored big with many such humorous books that dealt with how to secure an unfair advantage by employing subtle psychological ploys.

Hema Malini, Dharmedra and Amitabh Bacchan made guest appearances in the movie. Amitabh was making simultaneously “Zameer (1975)” for BR. In the scene he appears in this movie, he wears the same clothes that he was wearing in “Zameer”. Also, in the movie a billboard poster of “Zameer” can be seen at a bus stop.

There are only three songs in this film but Salilda does a magnificent job of it. All three are real beauties. Here they are …

It may be the picture. Because in this picture Jeetendra looks a bit chubbier. I always remembered him to be slimmer than this picture suggests. So probably it is the picture.
