(Raaj) Godaan (1963)

Here is an altogether delightfully different type of album with some absolutely beautiful songs that sound very very different than the ones we hear day to day. The main reason is that Pandit Ravi Shankar is its music director. For the handful of films he composed music for, he always gave a different touch. This album is no exception.

Here are these vividly different but very melodious songs from an original soundtrack album ...

This film is based on a famous novel of the same name by Premchand. Its considered by some to be the greatest hindi novel of the 20th century, although it was originally written in Urdu. I've read the excellent english translation which is quite famous in its own right. Apart from being a moving and very readable work of literature, it also educates one on rural traditions in early 20th century India and the Gandhi influence is obvious in the glorification of rural life and humility. I highly recommend the book...

Thanks for the info Faraaj. I did read the Hindi version. I didn't realize until now that Munshi Premchandji wrote this originally in Urdu. His other fine work that was made into a movie was that of Sadhana-Sunil Dutt starrer, "Gaban" made in 1966 ,with some beautiful music by Shankar & Jaikishan.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Have started visiting HF after a considerable gap and am surfing through some of the threads in SKS. Noticed this piece of information about Munshi Premchand and wanted to add my bit. Heera Moti, released in 1959, too was based on Munshi Premchand's story "Do Bailon Ki Katha" and had a few wonderful songs by Roshan, specially Kaune Rang Mungwa Kaune Rang Motiya, by Sudha Nad Suman. Salil Chowdhry too contributed a beautiful number, Naach Re Dharti Ke Pyaare, so remniscent of his earlier numbers from Do Bigah Zameen. The lead artistes Balraj Sahni and Nirupa too reproduced the Do Bigha Zameen magic in the backdrop of a powerful storyline set in Rural India. Both Heera Moti and Gaban were directed by the same director, Krishan Chopra. In Gaban, Hrshikesh Mukherjee also was co-director.

Thanks SP for continuing your wonderful threads in SKS with such dedication.

Pradeep

Pradeepji, it is so good to hear from you. Thank you very much for sharing this information. Also, many thanks for such nice and encouraging words.

Cheers,
S

(Rajendra) Mere Mehboob (1963)

There were two big reasons that made this movie such a big winner. First it was Sadhana's ravishingly beautiful but charmingly disarming simple looks that made millions fall in love with her. The second, and an equally important reason is beacuse of Naushadji's unforgettable score. Of course it was no "Baiju Bawra", but how many times one will exceed in their lifetime such a magnificent score anyway, but each song became a major hit with both versions of the title song taking the crown.

I am presenting these songs in two back-to-back postings. Here is a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ...

(Amitabh) Majboor (1974)

This film has several nice songs, including the dual version of "Dekh Sakta Hoon", Kishoreda's solo "Daaru", and the duet by Asha and Rafi Saab, "Roothe Rab". I am uploading these and the rest of the songs from an original soundtrack album below ...
