(Dharmendra) Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1967)
Guru Dutt started this movie in late 1963. The film’s inspiration was a 1937 Saigal starrer “President”. That movie was also known by various other titles including “Badi Bahen” and “Didi”. That classic film was directed by Nitin Bose for New Theatres. For “Baharen” Guru Dutt cast himself in the role of the leading man to the sisters played by Mala Sinha and Tanuja. O.P. Nayyar was back with Guru providing some of the great music for the film. It was reported in a magazine that after recording the song “Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe”, Guru was so overwhelmed by the song and the music that he went and hugged OP and told him that OP composes feelings not words. Incidentally, the movie was directed by Sahid Lateef but apparently the above song and other songs as well were picturized by Guru. While the shooting of the movie was making brisk progress, Guru passed away. He was eventually replaced by Dharmendra. For the above song, shots where Guru was present, were reshot with Dharmendra. In an interview this is what Tanuja, who was signed to play one of the sisters way back in 1962, has to say about Guru. She felt that during those years when they started the movie, she was not a dedicated actress. Guru apparently wasn’t happy with the situation and used to call up her mother Shobhana Samarth and used to tell her to instill some discipline in Tanuja. Tanuja also states that Guru was great to work with and at least they both had a common trait, both loved to read. The movie didn’t do well after it was released. But the music and the songs from the film endured. Every one of the song which have OP’s unmistakable stamp became major hits. But the song of the movie is, one of my all-time favorites of Rafi Saab, the solo “Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe”. It is just a smashing beauty. The lyrics, the picturization of the song, the light and shade effects the photography brings as subtleties to show the feelings of the sisters, with both Tanuja and Mala looking dazzling, and Dharmendra at his debonairly dashing best, is only topped by how Rafi Saab elevates this song to one of the greatest songs ever experienced in an Indian cinema. I am uploading all the songs from an original soundtrack album below. Here is a description of the songs and the songs themselves … Attached image(s) ![]() |

(Manoj) Picnic (1966)
Mohinder ji was trained as a classical musician and worked only on a handful of movies. These occurred during his stint with Filmistan Studios which was a hot spot for churning out musical after musical. In the few movies Mohinder ji worked on, he left an indelible mark. To prove the point, take this album as an example of his creative work. Almost every song is a pure delight in this album. My favorite of the lot is Rafi Saab's solo "Bijli Giri Kahaan" and other songs are not far behind. I am uploading these songs, all by the courtesy of the Forum members, thank you ... (Raaj) Zindagi (1964)
This Ramanad Sagr directed movie from Gemini was based on a Tamil and Telugu hit. Unfortunately I am not certain of the names of these movies. May be someone can help on this. But as in most of Gemini's early films, this one also has tons of songs. With Shankar & Jaikishan at the helm of composing music most songs became chartbusters and film became a huge hit. I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set ... Attached image(s) ![]() |

For me, singing sad songs often has a way of healing a situation. It gets the hurt out in the open into the light, out of the darkness.

(Raaj) Godaan (1963) Here is an altogether delightfully different type of album with some absolutely beautiful songs that sound very very different than the ones we hear day to day. The main reason is that Pandit Ravi Shankar is its music director. For the handful of films he composed music for, he always gave a different touch. This album is no exception. Here are these vividly different but very melodious songs from an original soundtrack album ... This film is based on a famous novel of the same name by Premchand. Its considered by some to be the greatest hindi novel of the 20th century, although it was originally written in Urdu. I've read the excellent english translation which is quite famous in its own right. Apart from being a moving and very readable work of literature, it also educates one on rural traditions in early 20th century India and the Gandhi influence is obvious in the glorification of rural life and humility. I highly recommend the book... Thanks for the info Faraaj. I did read the Hindi version. I didn't realize until now that Munshi Premchandji wrote this originally in Urdu. His other fine work that was made into a movie was that of Sadhana-Sunil Dutt starrer, "Gaban" made in 1966 ,with some beautiful music by Shankar & Jaikishan. Cheers, Swarapriya Have started visiting HF after a considerable gap and am surfing through some of the threads in SKS. Noticed this piece of information about Munshi Premchand and wanted to add my bit. Heera Moti, released in 1959, too was based on Munshi Premchand's story "Do Bailon Ki Katha" and had a few wonderful songs by Roshan, specially Kaune Rang Mungwa Kaune Rang Motiya, by Sudha Nad Suman. Salil Chowdhry too contributed a beautiful number, Naach Re Dharti Ke Pyaare, so remniscent of his earlier numbers from Do Bigah Zameen. The lead artistes Balraj Sahni and Nirupa too reproduced the Do Bigha Zameen magic in the backdrop of a powerful storyline set in Rural India. Both Heera Moti and Gaban were directed by the same director, Krishan Chopra. In Gaban, Hrshikesh Mukherjee also was co-director. Thanks SP for continuing your wonderful threads in SKS with such dedication. Pradeep |
