(Raaj) Shararat (1959)
Apart from its beautiful songs, this movie will be remembered for Rafi Saab singing for Kishore. The song is "Ajab Hai Daastaan". A real beauty by Rafi Saab. Wonder what was the reasoning behind this that the music directors decided to have Rafi Saab sing for Kishore. Nothing here to take away from Rafi Saab. He did a superbly fantastic job. It also is one of my favorite songs of Rafi Saab. Kishoreda himself has a beautiful song in "Hum Matwaale Naujawan". Lata has a couple of beautiful solos in "Dekho Baabu Chhed Ka Maza" and "Tera Teer O Bepeer". These songs have unmistakable Shankar & Jaikishan (S&J) stamp on them. In most of the 50's movies, Lata usually sang one or two songs for S&J that followed similar pattern. Geetaji didn't get too many oppertunities to sing for S&J. But in this film, she has two duets with Kishore. Both of them are endearingly sweet compositions. I am uploading songs from this fine album in back-to-back two posts. Here is the first set of songs, mostly by the courtesy of the Forum members. Thank you ... Attached image(s) ![]() |

(Raaj) Shararat (1959) Apart from its beautiful songs, this movie will be remembered for Rafi Saab singing for Kishore. The song is "Ajab Hai Daastaan". A real beauty by Rafi Saab. Wonder what was the reasoning behind this that the music directors decided to have Rafi Saab sing for Kishore. This has been discussed a few times on HF and other places like RMIM. Shararat (1959) had an interesting story where Kishoreda played a double role. In the first half he plays the lover of Meena Kumari and has sung 2 solos and 2 duets with Geeta ji. In the song "Tune meraa dil liyaa" there is a hint that this character is going to die. The lines are "Tere kadmon pe ek din maroon, tu kahe haaye re kyaa hua". This character dies at the interval time and then Meena Kumari is married off to Raj Kumar. The second Kishore Kumar is the younger brother of Raj Kumar. Fingers are raised about relationship of this Kishore Kumar with Meena Kumari, but he treats her like his mother. (Remember the lines "Tum aayi maa ki mamtaa liye toh muskuraaye hum). Rafi sahab sings for this second Kishore Kumar. There is no song on Meena Kumari in the second half. Songs sung by Lata ji are filmed on the other heroine Kumkum. I hope this clarifies the mystery regarding the choice of singers! Cheers Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com

Now I understand why the music director duo made that decision. Cheers. -S |

(Sunil) Hum Hindustani (1960)
Usha Khanna follows her stunning debut of "Dil Deke Dekho" in 1959 with this beautiful album. If there were any doubts whether the success of "Dil Deke Dekho" was just a flash in the pan, this movie completely erased them. Here Khanna shows that she can be versatile in handling different singers. Whereas "Dil Deke Dekho" was all Asha and Rafi Saab, in this movie she also has Lata and Mukesh sing. She also joins the fray in a duet with Geetaji. The standout songs from this album are both solos by Mukhjesh ji, "Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein" and "Raat Nikhri Huyi", and his deut with Asha, "Neeli Neeli Ghata". I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs ... This post has been edited by swarapriya: Apr 20 2010, 10:58 PM Attached image(s) ![]() |

The lyricist for the last 4 songs "K. Manohar" is actually Manohar Laal Khanna, father of composer Usha Khanna. He used various names like M L Khanna, Manohar and even a nick name Javed Anwar in many films he wrote lyrics for. In the late forties and early fifties he was employed with Nargis Films Arts as lyricist. He penned lyrics for as many as 12 songs for the film Darogaji (1949) under this film banner. The songs were composed by Bulo C Rani and all 12 of them were sung by young Geeta Roy.
I read it somewhere that M L Khanna passed away when Usha Khanna had just entered the film world. She too had a tough fight with the destiny. Parag Please visit www.geetadutt.com
