(Rajendra) Gharana (1961)
Here is a hit movie that was based on the Telugu hit "Shanti Nivasam (1960)". The movie is about a dominating matriarch who torments her daughter-in-law to no end. To add insult to injury, the long suffering daughter-in-law is also ill-treated by her hopeless husband who suspects that his own younger brother is having an illicit relationship with his wife. Several years ago when I saw both versions of this movie, I liked them. However, I have a different perspective on life in general and people in particular that have changed my views on many things, for right or wrong. Even though there are millions of people that exist in our society like those portrayed in this movie today, I no longer can swallow its premise. As for the music of the Hindi version, it is a beauty from Ravi. This comes on the heels of his spectacular success of Guru Dutt’s "Chaudhvin Ka Chand" only the previous year. For his efforts, this time, he grabbed the best music director award from Filmfare. The song "Husnwaale" is an absolute delight the way only Rafi Saab can sing. Shakeel Badayuni, who was also Ravi’s collaborator in “Chand”, penned the lyrics for this movie again. The “Husnwaale” song received the Best Lyricist Award from Filmfare for its beautifully rich and flowery lyrics. (Amitabh) Satte Pe Satta (1982)
This movie was based on the Hollywood hit musical, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” starring Jane Powell and Howard Keel in the leads. It was released in 1954 and was nominated for several Oscars. The movie boasted 14 songs and some of the best dances ever put on the screen. It won an Oscar for the Best Musical Score. “Satte Pe Satta” though inspired by the English version mentioned stood its own ground. It did have some great music and a palatable Indianized plot. It is not easy to compose songs when it involved seven women and seven men. Bur RD pulls it off magnificently. I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts.
