(Madhubala) Yahudi Ki Ladki (1957)

This album with Hemantda's music has Geetaji sing six out of seven songs that show the range in her inimitably beautiful voice. I wish the songs I am uploading were of better quality so that one can appreciate even more these beauties. Irrespective of that they are still a joy to listen to.

A side note. Krishna Kumari, whose picture can be seen below opposite to Madhubala's in the title area, was an yester year Telugu film actress who was popular as a heroine of many Telugu films in the 60's. She also starred in several Tamil and Kannada movies. Her acting stint included several brief appearances in Hindi films, some of them are very notable ones. These include, "Baiju Bawra (1952)", "Nagin (1954)", "Hariyali aur Rasta (1962)" and a few others.

Here are the songs from this album, all thanks to the courtesy of the Forum members ...

For me, singing sad songs often has a way of healing a situation. It gets the hurt out in the open into the light, out of the darkness.

(Meena) Miss Mary (1957)

This was one great comedy with lots and lots of songs, but all just beautiful to listen to. L.V. Prasad directed this movie for AVM Studios. It was originally made in Telugu as "Missamma (1955)" and the same year they also made it in Tamil. Both were huge hits. The story was taken from a Bengali novel by Yotish Banerjee called "Manmoyee Girls School".

Guru Dutt originally wanted to make this film in Hindi. Abrar Alvi, a friend of Guru, tells that he and Guru travelled to Hyderabad to see the Telugu version of the movie. But circumstances led them to meet instead Waheeda Rehman whom Guru Dutt invited to come to Bombay and work with him. Alvi Saab says that they did manage to see "Missamma" and Guru didn't like the movie that much for him to consider making it in Hindi. Both Telugu and Tamil versions were made by Vijaya Productions (who became famous with Hindi hits like "Ram Aur Shyam (1967)" and "Julie (1975)") and were director by L.V. Prasad.

Hemant Kumar who gave music to the film was so impressed with songs in the film versions in Telugu and Tamil that he decided to borrow one tune. "Brindaban Ki Krishna Kanhaiya" is identical the tune from the Telugu film.

I will upload songs from the Telugu film immediately after I am done with the Hindi songs. I am uploading songs of "Miss Mary" from an original soundtrack album in two back-to-back posts. Here is a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ...

Concluding Songs from "Miss Mary (1957)" ...

Here are the rest of the songs from this beautiful album. A word of caution. The song "Yeh Mard", the duet version, is the same as the two separate versions I am uploading here, but not as complete as the individual versions.

Now for the songs ...

Missamma (1955) - A Telugu Film

Hindi hit "Miss Mary (1957)" was based in this hit Telugu film. It has an all star cast and beautiful songs. The movie was based on a Bengali novel "Manmoyee Girls School" by Yotish Banerjee. It was originally supposed to star Bhanumati and Savitri. There are several stories why Bhanumati decided to not act in the movie. She later on went on record that she regretted her decision not to act in it. The producers decided to cast Savitri in the role originally Bhanumati was supposed to play. Then they added Jamuna to play the role Savitri was to play. Whatever the reasons are, in the final analysis, I think the movie entirely belonged to Savitri. She was simply magnificence personified.

Apart from L.V. Prasad's brilliant direction and Savitri's superlative performance, it was Rajeshwara Rao's music that gave life to the songs. Even today most of the songs are so sweet to listen to.

I am uploading these beautiful songs in back-to-back two posts. Here is a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves ...

As far as I know, this must be the only movie which can be understood by anybody in India, irrespective of their language, without any subtitles. The dialogues are spoken by the mouth but conveyed very well by the expressions by all the actors. I have several non-telugu friends who saw this movie and enjoyed thoroughly, without understanding a single word of telugu

(Meena) Farishta (1958)

Songs from this lovely album, with typical OP songs, are uploaded below. Please note that in the song "Jo Waqt Pe" there is a skip at 2:43 resulting in the loss of some verbage. But rest of the song is intact and in good quality.

Here are the songs ...
