(Mala) Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1966)

Guru Dutt started this movie in late 1963. The film’s inspiration was a 1937 Saigal starrer “President”. That movie was also known by various other titles including “Badi Bahen” and “Didi”. That classic film was directed by Nitin Bose for New Theatres. For “Baharen” Guru Dutt cast himself in the role of the leading man to the sisters played by Mala Sinha and Tanuja. O.P. Nayyar was back with Guru providing some of the great music for the film. It was reported in a magazine that after recording the song “Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe”, Guru was so overwhelmed by the song and the music that he went and hugged OP and told him that OP composes feelings, not words. Incidentally, the movie was directed by Sahid Lateef but apparently the above song and other songs as well were picturized by Guru.

While the shooting of the movie was making brisk progress, Guru passed away. He was eventually replaced by Dharmendra. For the above song, shots where Guru was present were reshot with Dharmendra.

In an interview this is what Tanuja, who was signed to play one of the sisters way back in 1962, has to say about Guru. She felt that during those years when they started the movie, she was not a dedicated actress. This lack of discipline on her part irked Guru to no end. He was so unhappy with the situation that Guru used to call up her mother Shobhana Samarth and used to complain about Tanuja’s attitude and used to tell her to instill some discipline. Tanuja admitted that only late in her carrier she came to realize that why it was important to be dedicated to do the best of your abilities to do the job at hand. She adds that Guru was great to work with and they shared a common trait, both loved to read.

The movie didn’t do well after it was released. But the music and the songs from the film endured. Every one of the song which have OP’s unmistakable stamp became major hits. But the song of the movie is one of my all-time favorites of Rafi Saab, the solo “Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe”. It is just a smashing beauty. Endearingly effective lyrics, the dazzling picturization of the song, the use of light and shade effects by the camera to bring in subtleties to show the feelings of the sisters, with both Tanuja and Mala looking enchantingly engaging, and Dharmendra at his debonairly dashing best, is only topped by how Rafi Saab elevates this song to one of the greatest romantic songs ever experienced in an Indian cinema. The song has such intense fever pitch feeling in the divinely sweet voice of Rafi Saab that it completely consumes you with no let up until it is over. Even then it lingers on and on…

I am uploading all the songs from an original soundtrack album in two back-to-back posts below. Here is a description of the songs in the first post and the songs themselves …

(Vyjayanti) Jewel Thief (1967)

This was the last movie Goldie (Vijay Anand) directed for his brother Dev. Dev took over directorial chores starting with their next production and though had an occasional success at it, almost every movie he directed proved to be a disaster. But that is a different topic.

Coming back to this film, it was a huge success. It was nicely done in picturesque locales and with beautiful women (Vyjayanti & Tanuja) adorning the film. The movie was such a success that after several years, Dev made a disastrous sequel to it.

One of the major contributing factor to the success the movie enjoyed owed to a large extent to the music of Burmanda. As usually is the case with him, he gave one of his best efforts. This shows in every song. Each of them became a huge hit. I have so many favorites in this film. The duet by Lata & Rafi Saab, "Dil Pukaare" is an utter delight. The swinging song by Lata & Bhupinder, "Honthon Mein" just keeps ringing in your mind long after listening to it. "Rulake Gaya" is another lovely song beautifully performed by Lata. Then that sensational solo by Asha, "Raat Akeli". It was sensationally performed on the screen by Tanuja. Lovely and bubbly. An absolute delight.

I am uploading these songs in three back-to-back posts. The first two cover songs from the album and a couple of specials. The third post has a few extended version songs.

Here are the songs in the first post...

Continuing Songs from "Jewel Thief (1967)"...

Apart from the rest of the songs from this beautiful album, I am also including here a couple of specials. Both are to do with the song "Raat Akeli". For one of these, both Asha & SD give an introduction. This is taken from the album "Legends: S.D. Burman - The Ageless All Rounder (CD4)". The other song has an introduction by SD alone. This is taken from the album, "Legends: Asha Bhosle - The Enchantress (CD 2)".

Here are these songs...

(Waheeda) Main Sundar Hoon (1971)

This movie was based on the Tamil hit "Server Sundaram" made in 1964 that made Nagesh a star. Mahmood reprised the role in Hindi. The film had various guest appearances by film luminaries. Waheeda had an uncredited guest appearance acting as herself in a film shoot. Music director Jaikishan also appeared as himself in the song "Naach Meri Jaan".

Here are the songs from this film from an original soundtrack album ...
