SHASHI KAPOOR SAYS

Ive always loved listening to a variety of music, From the vocals of a Western classical singer like Frankie Lane to Indian classical singers like Bhimsen Joshi, Girija Devi and Begum Parveen Sultana, to Hindi film music. But, my favourite piece of music would be by the duo Shankar-Jaikishen, who I think were the best thing to have happened to Hindi film music. Even a maestro like Naushad once mentioned that the two were not musicians, but MAGICIANS

One of India most famous and first international producer - Director Ismail merchant was close To Shankar Jaikishan. and was good frd of Jaikishan. When it came to taking up a mainstream composer for his film he choosed SJ for his movie Bombay talkie(1970). Shankar jaikishan show helped him in arranging money for his further studies in America. and they also helped him in introducing to Film artists particulary the big singers like Rafi, lata, manna etc.
Note : two songs of Bombay talkie again featured in hollywood movie - "The darjeeling limted" including the brilliant Title music !

Now this is what ISMAIL MERCHANT has to say about Shankar JaIkishan in his Autobiography " My passage from India"

AFter all, I was connected with the bombay film world.I had, by now, also introduced myself to the composers Shankar and Jaikishan , who worked as a team and were responsible for music of many popular hindi films, including those of great RK, Jaikishan like Karim Samar and me was also a habitue of bombelli's, the swiss cafe, were he would sit in a corner with his coffee and his tin of 555 cigarettes. I could not waste such an oppurtunity, so I introduced myself. Through him I could and I did, call on the services of some ofthe most famous playback singers in bombay films, wheedling them into performing at our sangeet mandal shows."

He mentions how he organised 80 piece orchestra in college and bring big singers in college. and then laterz he writes how he managed arrange money for his further studies with the help of Shankar jaikishan show !

"My father's resorces were limted and he could provide a portion of the costs. my fellow students at St Xaviers with whom I had worked to put on the college shows over the years now took it on themselves to organize a variety show with Shankar and Jaikishan as the guests of the honour. They raised Twenty thousand rupees - a fortune in those day - and touchingly gave the money to me as a gift towards my American studies "

Now read what Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi shankar has to say about Shankar Jaikishan. When told that he popularised Indian music. he clearly disagrees says instead it was SHANKAR JAIKISHAN who made Indian music popular all over the world. This is what even Ustaad akbar ali had said. I think THINGS shd be very m uch clear when two of India's biggest musical exports say that it was Shankar jaikishan who popularised Indian music on such a scale !

PANDIT RAVI SHANKAR Says

Q : You were the first film music director from India to be recognised internationally.

Ravi shankar : I will not say so of myself. The creations of Shankar-Jaikishan in Awara and Shree 420 - ‘Awara hoon’ and ‘Mera joota hai Japani’ - were on the lips of every Russian and Chinese. ‘Awara hoon’ was a favourite number of even comrade Mao Tse Tung.

Manna dey recently got Dada saheb phalke award. And in one of the interviews given to Hindu he again confirms how big SJ's contribution has been to his career.


Manna dey says :

Who is the best music director you have worked with?

Shanker-Jaikishan, obviously. The duo, the most versatile in the nation, composed the maximum number of hits in the maximum number of films possible. Shanker-Jaikishan understood my full depth as a singer and used me brilliantly to sing for Raj Kapoor, Raaj Kumar and Shammi Kapoor. .

Here is Pyarelal of Laxmikant- Pyarelal fame, once again praising SHANKAR JAIKISHAN ! Topic was A R rehman getting Oscar award and to that, Pyarelal again reminded people that NO ONE CAN COME closer to SJ !


PYARELAL SAYS

I am very happy that Rahman has got the Oscar, that a good artiste got it. If Rahman would have got it for Lagaan I'd have been happier.
He is good, but he is not the best according to me nor has he done anything very different. Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Jatin Lalit are also good. Pritam is good too. I don't think he's outstanding.

That he came from the south to the north is not new either. Illaiaraja did it before him. I like his music but I am very blunt.

Shankar Jaikishen is Shankar Jaikishen no one can touch them.

Like that, there are others who each have their own standing. But I am happy for him that he's got the Oscar.

Those who dont know the calibre of Pyarelal shd know that on seeing his perfection Manna dey had commnented that he once felt like touching his feet . He is master in orchestration !

Here is what musical Giant Ilayaraja has to say about Shankar Jaikishan. Even for tamil song he gives example of a SJ song and praises them !

Ilayaraja Says :

The influence of melancholic love songs in film music has been enormous. There have been many good music directors who have excelled in giving us beautiful love songs.
He then hums the tune of a famous tamil love song.
He then says:
Now look at the compositions of Shankar Jaikishan. Don't think of them as just hindi songs (he is talking to a tamil audience). Listen to the music (which has no barriers of language or culture - my addition)
He then hums the tune of 'yeh shaam hi tanhaiyan'. He then concludes 'We must salute such music directors'.
