I was abt to sign off for the day par ab to gaana dl kiye bina neend nahi aayegi.

Just heard the song--quality is fine except for a few barely perceptible sqeaks in the beginning--U guys really are masters at this cleaning stuff (P_envious)
And Ur collection is awesome--so many unheard songs!!!! But tell me are U fonder of the 60s-70s than the 50s--I think U said in the Rafi forum that U aren't too keen on hunting for 50s songs?

I'm keen on all decades.................but you are right in saying i am fonder in 60's and 70's more than 50's......................I have alot of songs from 50's and 60's but did not feel as if i had enough of 70's for certain singers suchas Rafi as they very quickly became hard to get hold of......................thats why for MAS i have concentrated more on 70's................I try my best to avoid uploading common numbers and just concentrate on the rarer ones.

If i had to choose i would say later 60's to early 80's is my favourite era...........whether its Rafi, Kishore, Mukesh, MK, Asha or Lata.

As for cleaning the songs i really enjoy doing it as 3/4 of my collection is from tape and vinyl and i find it easy to clean them [took 4 months to learn this software]
I've done wonders to some songs from really old tapes that i had coverting them to mp3.

over the next month or so i will go through some tapes with Shabbir Kumar, Mohd Aziz & Suresh Wadker songs as there may be duets of them singing with Asha Bhonsle.

Hello Antji!!
Do not bother about the time zone--waise bhi ek mahine ke liye gaane yehi rahenge.
I like all decades (barring the 90s I think) esp when my fav singer is singing though my fav decades are the 40s, 50s and 60s. True U get better orchestration and so on post 70s but there is a certain magic in the 50s songs and a quaintness in the 40s stuff that I adore. But as far as Asha is concerned U have good songs till the late 80s. And her voice was at its best in the 70s -80s.
BTW which sw do U use for cleaning songs? Tapes are easier to do--how do U tackle vinyls? Esp hard needle scratch and sometimes needle drag?

Thanks. I use cool edit and goldwave. Does anyone know how to restore sound--like I have a song that apparently goes blank in the middle but my amplifying the audio I retrieved the sound but it sounds like a ghost or something--I presume a master would paste a smaple voice in the tight tone or something--is there any simple way of doing this--tried fiddling with treble and reverb and such things but without significant results.

some of my favourite songs are from 40's and 50's too
eg "Chanda ka dil toot gaya hai rone lage hai sitare ~ Khoj 1953"
or "Tum hume bhool gaye hum na tumhe bhool sake ~ Balam 1948"
and a favouite one is "O door ke musafir humko bhi saat lele re ~ Uran khatola 1952"
just to name a few as i dont want to flood the Asha forum with a list of Rafi songs

but the majority of these early years favourites tend to be tear jerkers/sentimental

Whats it like with tha Asha ji early numbers.................which ones do you like...........was the majority of your favourites from 40's early 50's tear jerkers/sentimental or romantic ones.

upload it when you get time....................let me have a go and if i can restore it then i'll send you the song back and instructions of what i did to enhance the song so you can have a bash with your software too if you want to.

At a guess without listening to the song i would say :
If the blank in the middle is part of a repeat eg chorus you can copy a good part and then cut and paste it..........................if not then it looks like cut the middle out and amplify the sound so its a good match to the rest of the song, now you will have alot of hiss in the sound [is that what you mean it sounds like a ghostly effect]....................apply hiss remove.................hiss will vanish but now the sound is a little heavy in base [due to hiss remove] so now you got to drop the base and up the treble in accordance to the rest of the song.
Thats how i do it.

What do I like abt her early songs--well basically what I like in any song is I guess pretty much what everyone likes-- melody and good lyrics, songs can survive with just one of these but when they come together it is magic. What I like abt the early songs is the style. Outdated in many ways but I have a particular fondness for the tunes of the late 40s-early 50s. Not the greatest of orchestration those days and simple tunes but U could sway to them. With Asha actually many of the early songs I like are sad ones bec in the later stage of her career she got less of those. So it is nice to hear her in the pure romantic (minus naughtiness) or the completely sad genres. Then there are many of the light Western dance numbers which are cute.
With Asha one really has a song for every mood. Think of any situation and Asha will have not one but a platter of songs lined up.
Yes her very first few songs do not sound much like her but as a fan I like having them. It is also nice to listen to her early songs that are in the Shamshad mode or the Geeta mode and see how her own style evolved from there.
