Anari (1959)

Here is another winner from Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This movie when it was released was advertised as the "story of a little big man". Indeed it was. Raj Kapoor gets here another opportunnity to show his histroinics and he gives another spledidly inspired performance. He was matched frame from frame by another great performance by the character actress Lalita Pawar. To top all this, there was music by Shankar & Jaikishan that has many songs that are popular even today.

Thi movie, like many of Hrishida's movies, was both a critical and commercial success. It won five Filmfare awards. Raj Kapoor finally won best acting award for his performance in this movie. It is so surprising that with the credentials he had, with ample proof of acting skills he demonstrated movie after movie, it took this long for awards committees to recognize him. This was long time coming and way over due. Lalita Pawar also won the award for best supporting actress. Shankar & Jaikishan picked up their second Filmfare award. Best lyricist was Shailendra for the song from this movie, "Sab Kuchh Seekha Hum Ne". Mukesh was the best playback singer for the same song. Incidentally, the tune for the song "Kisi Ki Muskurahaton Se" was influenced by the background music of Raj's Shree 420.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Thanks for the Anari u/l Swarapriya.
A superb movie all around. One of my favourite. A well deserved award for everyone who were recognised.
This was one of the first DVD's I bought. Countless no. of times I have put the dvd to watch just a song and
ended up watching the whole movie. and each time never realized where the 3 hrs vanished.

You are right about long overdue recognition of RK's talent. The two solo by Mukesh are just out of this world. It was during the making of Anari that Hrishikesh Mukherjee had decided to make Aanad with
Raj Kapoor in the lead, which they could not but did acknowledge Raj Kappor when they finally made it
with Rajesh Khanna. Another one of my favourite movie.

Aasiq was another movie where Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Raj Kapoor came to gather with excellent result.

Ramesh, I share your feelings about this movie. I knew Raj was to play in "Anand". I am not sure why he decided to drop out. In all fairness though, Rajesh did a great job.

Cheers,
S

Raj Kapoor woes already sick in this days and the Director of the movie Anand woes Raj Kapoor Best friend. He hear that Raj woes close to die ones and He dont wont to see Raj Kapoor Die In Real in front him in the movie.
This movie woes dedicated to Raj Kapoor.

The movie even show the Friend ship between Raj Kapoor and Hrishikesh Mukherjee

The term "Babu Moshai" means "great gentleman." Raj Kapoor often affectionately addressed Hrishikesh Mukherjee with this term, just as Anand addresses Bannerjee.

No doubt Rajesh Khnna did a great job. IMHO it's his one of the best if not the best performance. As to why
Raj Kapoor opted out, my guess would be he was too old for hero's role by the time they made Anand. At least the hero had the same (RK) initials. Like Anari music and songs of Anand are ever green.
