Ijaazat (1987)
This movie was based on a Subodh Ghosh’s Bengali novel, “Jatugriha”. In 1964, it was made into a movie of the same name in Bengali by the renowned Tapan Sinha and starred Arundhati Devi and Uttam Kumar. For the Hindi version, Gulzar wrote the screenplay, dialogues, lyrics, and also directed. “Ijaazat” had only four songs, all sung by Asha Bhosle. But all four are just absolute gems. The great R.D. Burman, who was associated with Gulzar in so many movies, composed some of the beautiful tunes. The song “Mere Kuchh Saamaan” fetched Gulzar the National Film Award for best lyrics. He also got the similar award from Filmfare. Asha’s same song also won her the best female playback singer National Film Award. I am not sure how the Bengali version was, but this is one magnificent movie. A complex story woven between three characters played by Rekha, Anuradha Patel, and Naseeruddin Shah. All three excelled in their roles. The movie explores the love triangle and the intricacies it brings into the lives of the three affected people. Anuradha Patel brings in a refreshingly beautiful display of acting skills by playing the role of a free spirited person who cannot be committed to any lasting relationship. Someone described that her role was like that of a morning breeze that is evasive but always lingering behind you. I haven’t seen much of Patel’s work except for this one. Apparently she appeared in 25 or so movies and on TV. She is the maternal grand daughter of Ashok Kumar. Here are the songs from this movie … This post has been edited by swarapriya: Aug 23 2009, 11:31 PM Attached image(s) ![]() |

Ijaazat (1987) Dear SP, Thanks for posting this absolute gem. I am kind of averse to film music after the late seventies. Out of the large number of films belonging to the eighties & nineties, there are just a handful that stand out for memorable music. IJAAZAT is one of them. I am a big fan of Asha & consider this to be the high watermark of her singing career. What makes each song, noteworthy, apart from Asha's singing, is Gulzar's light-as-air poetry. 'Mere kuch saamaan...' is an bewildering work chronicling loss, remembrance and longing, couched in Gulzar's magical words and sung ever so beautifully by Asha. I really did not know about the Bengali origins of this film. It was fascinating to read all the nuggets of information; as usual, your research is excellent. I was missing IJAAZAT and more particularly 'Mera kuch saamaan...'. Thanks, once again, SP, for making my day. Bestr Regards, Suresh This post has been edited by madsur: Aug 24 2009, 02:00 AM |

Batwara (1989)
J.P. Dutta is in the habit of making movies with a huge star cast. This movie is no exception. I was expecting that the experience of watching this movie will leaveme with something worthwhile to remember. However, sadly, it was a total disappointment. The movie did have some good songs by LP. All these songs were ripped from the DVD. The missing singer names and the correct song titles themselves were given to me by Exon and Aditya. Thank you. Because of this, some of the wording of the songs in the table may not exactly match the zipped files. My sincere apologies for the confusion ... Here are the songs ...
