Sipahsalar (1956)

This 1956 movie starrred Shammi Kapoor. Apart from that I do not have any further details. Also, I don't have a single song from this movie. I am requesting the Forum members to share any information and/or songs about this movie. Thanks.

Parag,

You are among the most generous contributors in this forum. Therefore, I hate to write this.
The song audio you uploaded is not from Sipahsalar, instead 'aaj kuchh hone waala hai' from Khul Ja Sim Sim. I think mix up is due to tagging error. If you have the correct audio, please upload it.

And if I remember correctly, Geeta Bali played a male role in the film. Its not a role where a woman pretends to be a man and finally reveals her identity, she actually perfromed a male role.

As commented by the veteran Hindi Fim, HFM music (and cricket) expert Shirish Kanekar, this could possibly the only such instance !

Cheers
Parag

No, Parag. Way back in late 40's, much before 1956 Rangeen Raatein, actress G. Varalakshmi played the character of Prahlada in the Telugu movie "Bhakta Prahlada". She was a grown up woman and couldn't hide her feminine features inspite of the make up worn. It looked so bad that it was almost embarrassing to watch it. It was one of those famous miscasts in Telugu movie history.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Swarapriya

Its nice to know such pieces of information ! Probably what Kanekar wrote was true for Hindi films only.. I am sure even would not be aware of this old Telugu film !

biggrin.gif

And my memories of this book are like almost 15-20 years old, so there could be some mistake from my side. Anyways, its one of the rare instances for sure !

Cheers
Parag

Coffee House (1957)

This is one of the three movies in which Shammi appeared with Geeta Bali, whom he married during the filming of "Rangeen Raatein" the previous year. This was also the last movie in which they appeared together. This was also the year Shammi was going to make a breakthrough and achieve super stardom. Meanwhile, inspite of good songs, this movie also commercially laid an egg.

There are eight songs in this movie. I am uploading four of them. The missing songs are shown in red italics in the following table. I am requesting the Forum memmership to kindly share these missing songs with rest of us.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Thanks, Swarapriyaji & Paragji!

woman is the mirror in which man sees the reflection of his own self, his own dormant and hidden powers of genius when she comes and stands before him
A woman is a meaning to life ! Someone who loves, who cares !

Maharani (1957)

I don't have a clue about this 1957 Shammi's movie. If the Forum members can share any information about this movie and can share some of its songs, it will be great.

Mirza Sahiban (1957)

Here is another great love story from the land of lore, Punjab. Punjab must be a special place to have so many love stories immersed in their rich culture.

Earlier Shammi made Laila Majnu, another great romantic tragedy, with Nutan. Inspite of the great songs, that movie was a commercial failure. This movie was made with Shyama as Sahiban. But results were no different even this go around. Unfortunately this movie was following the great Noor Jehan's 1947 movie with the same title. (I will upload songs from this movie in this section right after I am done with this).

The great tragic fable of Mirza Sahiban was made into a movie several times. The first one was made in 1933. The second one with the incomparable Noor Jehan was made in 1947. This was the third one. In 2006, another movie with the same title was made. Pakistan also made this movie, with the same title, in 1951.

Here are the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

Mirza Sahiban (1947)

Here are the songs from the great Noor Jehan starrer Mirza Sahiban. This movie stars another Kapoor, Trilok. There are 10 delightful songs in this album with Noor Jehan singing six of them (solos and duets). I am uploading this album so that our members can appreciate defferences between this album and the 1957 Shammi starrer.

Now for the details of the songs of "Mirza Sahiban (1947)" and the songs themselves ...

Swarapriya, thanks for posting one of the greatest albums of late forties. Pandit Amarnath ji gave memorable music for this film. If I remember correctly, Pandit Husnalal ji and Bhagataram were his younger brothers who helped him in this film. Songs of Mallika-E-Tarannum Noor Jehan ji and G M Durrani sahab are evergreen and are treat to ears even 60 years later. They will continue to enthrall the music lovers for generations to come. These are immortal melodies and let us all thank these great artists who created this magic.

Best Regards
Parag

Thanks Parag. Everytime I read your comments I learn something new. This time it is the relationship between the music directors for this movie. This is the first time I have learnt that the three of them were brothers.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Swarapriya,

I always watch for your great selections. Thanks again for yet another great old album.
I have some doubt about the male singer in 'Aaj miyaan ji' song. In this song, the male voice sounds different from other two GMD songs from this album. Let's wait for senior members to confirm the male singer.
