Bhagam Bhag (1956)

The comedian-actor Bhagwan Dada who made a fortune with "Albela" in 1951, he produced and directed and was a leading man of that film, squandered away most of his wealth to near bankruptcy on a string of movies he made that didn't capture the same magic. Comparatively speaking, this movie which he also produced and directed, did modest business mainly because of some fine music and the chemistry between Kishoreda and Bhagwan.

I am uploading all of the songs from this album. The quality of some of the songs is not up to the mark. I tried to clean them but originals I downloaded were so bad, it only helped a bit. Also, in some songs there are skips. However, with all these real problems, the listening pleasure of these songs is not completely lost as overall quality is still bearable.

There are several nice tracks in this album. I like both of the songs sung by Rafi Saab and Kishoreda together. The song by Rafi Saab and Batish is also worth noting. I will upload these in two back-to-back posts.

Now for the details of these songs and the songs themselves in the first post...

My Dear Pratul,

That is very kind of you.

Unfortunately the problem is that these albums are very dated. We as a Nation are notorious in not preserving our cultural heritage and assets like these. Even though you are looking for better quality, I may have disappointed you because many times I do not have that much better quality albums. I myself am constantly on the lookout by searching various alternate sources in the hope of striking gold. But gold is a precious and becoming an unaffordable and scarce commodity. For me, possessing riches like these remains an unfulfilled dream.

Thanks again for your continued support for these efforts.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Ustad (1957)

Anjali Devi (see her pictures in the attachment below), the heroine of this film, hails from Andhra Pradesh. She made her film debut in 1936 in a small role. She got her break as a heroine in L.V. Prasad’s “Kashtajeevi” but the movie was never completed as the producers ran out of money and decided to scrap the project. Her first hit Telugu film was “Gollabhama” made in 1947. This was followed by a series of blockbusters as she ruled the Telugu film field unchallenged for some time.

Anjali Devi’s first Hindi film was “Punarmilan” made in 1940. She appeared in nearly 30 Hindi films, some of them dubbed from Telugu or Tamil and others made directly in Hindi. She acted opposite some of the top heroes of Hindi cinema such as Raj Kapoor (“Parivartan” in 1949) and Ashok Kumar (“Ustad” in 1957). Some of her notable Hindi films include “Ladki” made in 1953 and “Ustad” in 1957. She acted in over 350 films, mostly in Telugu. She produced about 30 films, most of them Telugu. One of her famous Hindi films was the successful fantasy “Suvarna Sundari” released in 1958.

There are at least seven songs in the film “Ustad”. I am uploading five of them here. Overall quality of these songs is variable from okay to very good. I tried to clean all of them but hissing noise remains in some of them. The two missing songs are shown in red italics in the table below. If you have any of these songs or there are others not listed here, please share them with rest of us. Thank you.

Even though all five songs I am uploading here were chart busters, the song of the album is the classic solo by Geetaji, “Chor Lutere Daaku”. This song is considered to be one of her top songs and if you are hearing this for the first time you will immediately realize why it is so. In the vibrantly mellifluous voice of Geetaji this song comes alive as the instrumentation, mostly influenced by Spanish beats, and the superb composition become simply irresistible.

Here are the five songs I have…
