I am re-uploading these songs on request...

Besides this album, O.P. Nayyar composed music for two other movies of Sheikh Mukhtar, “Do Ustad (1959)” and “Mangu (1954)”. This album has at least eight songs that I am uploading here. The sources of these songs are from CD collections, DVDs and probably contributions from the Forum members. I tried to clean these songs to improve their quality. The result is decent enough. Yet, because of the diversity of these sources, the quality of the songs is also very diverse from very good to so so. Please bear this in mind when downloading these songs.

With OP at the helm one can expect lots of Asha and some of Geetaji. This album has their fine numbers. But besides, there is Suraiya. Not only she was the leading lady of the film but she had two beautiful solos and a duet with Rafi Saab. Both of her solos are simply superb. My favorite is the song “Soyee Hai Kahaan Jaa Kar”. It is an absolute beauty of a song with deep pangs of pathos. This is a great composition to touching lyrics. And unparalleled rendering in the mesmerizing voice of Suraiya. It leaves one with such an indelible impression on your heart that you keep thinking about it for a long long time…

Mai Baap (1957)

The year 1957 was a very busy one for OP. He gave music to seven movies ("Bade Sarkar", "Duniya Rang Rangili", "Mai Baap", "Naya Daur", "Qaidi", "Tumsa Nahin Dekha", and "Ustad"). Busy or not, he gave hit music to all of the movies. Some of the movies hardly made the grade, yet the music went onto flourish. There were some blockbusters like "Tumsa Nahin Dekha" and the award winning "Naya Daur".

"Mai Baap" did only a moderate business even though it had a pretty good premise for the story. Johnny Walker played a funny but a bad guy in the film trying to cheat the winnings of the lottery won by Balraj Sahni who played a blind person. Almost every song was a hit. Even today they are fun to listen to. Geetaji and Rafi Saab have two duets that were popular. Rafi Saab's solo was a chart buster. Both solos by Asha were also popular, especially the song "Gaalon Pe Teri". I am uploading all these songs below. It appears like I am missing at least one song shown in red italics in the table below. If indeed this is the case, please share the song with rest of us if you can. Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujala (1958)

Here is another beautiful album from OP. This one stars Nutan and the inimitable Kishore Kumar. Almost all songs from this movie were popular when it was released. Pleases bear in mind that because of the diversity of the sources of these songs, their quality varies. However, almost all songs are uniformly good to listen to.

Kishoreda's "Surma Mera Nirala" was a chart buster. It still adorns any number of his CD compilations. I think it rightfully deserves the credit. Only Kishoreda could sing such songs, yodeling and changing voice so many different ways. There are four solos by Asha, her usual quota for a typical OP album. As usually the case, she always gives her best for OP. Her title track, “Ajab Hamaari”, is one of the better songs. But for me the standout song of the album is the duet of Asha with Manna Dey, "Baahon Ko Zara Lehraado". It was done very beautifully and stays with you for a long time.

Mangu (1954)

This is one of the early movies of OP. Sheikh Mukhtar, the giant of a man, yes, indeed he was very tall and big, produced and acted in this movie. This was the first of the three movies OP provided music for Mukhtarji. For this movie he actually was a co-music director along with Mohd. Shafi. Shafi Saab composed music for two songs and OP for four. The other movies for which OP provided music for Sheikh Mukhtar were “Mr. Lambu” in 1956 and “Do Ustad” in 1959.

Sheikh Saab made several movies only to face disaster with his last movie "Noor Jehan" that was his dream project. In a severe financial crunch even before the movie was released, he migrated to Pakistan. Even there he couldn't receive the recognition he was hoping for when he was alive. Ironically, after his death, "Noor Jehan" was released in Pakistan and it went on to become a sound success.

One of the distinguishing features of this movie is that it introduced Suman Kalyanpur as a singer. She was only 17 at the time and caught the eye of Talat Mahmood during a concert. He introduced her to HMV, his music recording company and through them she got her first break in this movie. She sang only one song, “Koi Pukaare Dheere Se Tujhe”, in this film. It was composed by Shafi Saab. Sumanji was a great singer but never got her due because she was branded another Lata and she has to work under Lata’s giant shadow. Not an easy task for anyone. In her professional career she managed to sing about 800 songs.

Shafi Saab who was the co-music director for this movie along with OP provided music for a handful of movies. Some of his popular movies were “Annadata” in 1952 and “Zindagi” in 1956. At later stages of his life, he worked on a Pakistani film and later apparently was as an assistant to the fabled Naushadji.

I am uploading six songs from this movie. I am not sure how many more are in this film. If there are any missing songs that I am not uploading here, requesting members to kindly share. Thank you. Most of these songs came from various sources. Because of the heterogeneous nature of these sources, I have to emphasize that the quality of these songs is not uniform. I have cleaned these songs to get rid of the noise. Most of the songs turned out to be good except for Suman’s debut song. I wish I had a better version of this beautiful song. I am requesting members to share this if they feel they have one. One of our fellow members, Chopin, was kind enough to upload this song sometime back at my request. Unfortunately, as noted, its quality is so so. This may be because it probably is a difficult song to get hold of.

I am including several photographs of Sheila Ramani in the table below. These pictures are from various films and not necessarily are from this film. Sheila, a beautiful woman, never became that popular even though she is remembered for her performances in Dev Anand’s “Taxi Driver” in 1954 as a supporting actress and later in Dev’s “Funtoosh” in 1956 as his heroine.

It is interesting to note somewhat superficial similarity between the song “Mann More Gaa” in this film and Burmanda’s song in “Lajwanti (1958)”, “Gaa Mere Mann Gaa”. Both songs were sung by Asha. Also, both were written by the same lyricist, Majrooh Sultanpuri. However, the comparison ends there. Each of these songs in its own way, represent the style of their music composers, with their special individual stamps imprinted all over them. The only commonality they have between them is that they both are such absolute beauties to listen to…
