Harshji,

Looks like you're checking around to see what I've been up to. The uploads of the last few albums have been so much fun because there is so much rich music there. Of course, there is more coming.

With OP, choosing not a favorite one is always a difficult thing. But defintely, this one also is one of my favorite albums.

Cheers,
Swarapriya

Sawan Ki Ghata (1966)

Following the great success he enjoyed with "Kashmir Ki Kali", Shakti Samanta made this movie with almost all of the same ingredients with one exception. This time it was not Shammi Kapoor but Manoj Kumar was the hero. Of course not many can be physical actors like Shammi and Manoj Kumar definitely was not in the same league. He looked ill at ease throughout the movie. It was a curious miscast by a seasoned filmmaker.

However, everything else remained the same for this movie. It has beautiful Sharmila as well as Mumtaz and was shot mostly outdoors. It also was embellished by another foot tapping score by OP Saab. Out of the eight songs in this album, Ashaji has four solos and two duets. They all are very catchy. Mahendra Kapoor has one good song and Rafi Saab has only one solo but a real beauty.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Swarapriya Ji, your thread is equally Smash-Hit as of OPN's music, my most favourite composer.

'Thanks' seems very small word for your super-duper hit work.

Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1967)

There is another 1966 album with some beautiful songs that I was to upload ("Yeh Raaat Phir Na Aayegi") but it was recently uploaded. I will wait for sometime before I will upload this album again. In the mean time we move onto our next album "Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1967)".

This was Guru Dutt's last offering. He died during making of this movie. Originally, Guru Dutt himself was the hero in the movie. Little over one-third of the movie was shot. Two of the famous songs in this album ("Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe" and "Woh Hanske Mile Hum Se") were already picturized. When Guru Dutt died, his brother Atma Ram took onto finish the job. Guru Dutt's role was was played by Dharmendra.

Guru Dutt because of his bckground training was thought of as a great picyurizer of songs, amongs other things. The above mentioned two songs carry his imprint all over. The use of light and shade in both of these songs brings in a black & white movie some stunning effects. In fact, the picturization of the song "Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe" is a text book example of how it should be done.

This movie originally had S.D. Burman signed up to compose its music. In fact Burmanda composed the tune for the title song. Then Guru Dutt had some differences with SD and they amicably parted company. OP was a good old friend of Guru Dutt. He stepped in. Guru Dutt was still alive when all of the songs were composed. Apparently he was so pleased with the songs and their compositions that he applauded OP's efforts by sharing with him that those were not just songs but they are feelings.

By th way, Burmanda used the tune he composed for Dev Anand's "Jewel Thief (1968)". This was for that famous song sung by Kishoreda "Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara".

This film was a remake of another famous film K.L. Saigal's "President (1937)". Story essentially remained the same except the backdrop was changed from a textile mill to a newspaper publication.

Tanuja, one of the leading ladies of the movie, never looked so beautiful. I remember this movie not only for its its famous songs but also for the bubbly and standout performance of Tanuja. She was an absolute delight. Of course, Dharmendra never looked handsomer and gives a very understated and subdued performance.

What lifts this movie one notch above a simple routine average one is its music. This happens to be one of OP's best outings. He has been riding the wave of high creativity for some time, and this movie reflects that infectious enthusiasm all over. All songs are extremely beautiful. Both solos by Ashaji are beautiful songs. But my favotite is, Rafi Saab's solo "Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe". This got to be one of his top 10 or 15 songs.

Now for details of the songs and the songs themselves ...

A little note about the movie :

Waheeda Rehman had deserted Guru Dutt and its said that he got inspired from that incident.

"Badal jaaye agar maali, chaman hota nahin khaali
Baharen phir bhi aati hain, baharein phir aayengi"

These lines were written and this film was taken up. Unfortunately Guru Dutt passed away during the making of the film. Relatively newcomer Dharmendra was roped in the lead role.

Thank you very much Parag for doing this. I always wondered how some topics were grouped above rest of others. So it takes a special request from someone, apparently whose advice is trusted by the Forum adminsitrators, to act on this. Thank you once again Parag for doing this.

Cheers to you and many thanks to our admin folks for giving this thread the special status.
