Gunga Jumna (1961)

In a book on Mehboob Khan, its author tells how "Gunga Jumna" movie came about. Mehboobji decided to remake his previous acclaimed work "Aurat." This was the movie "Mother India." Dilipji, who was a good friend of Mehboob Khan, collaborated with him making suggestions on how the picture and some of its characters, especially that of Birju, should be developed. Dilipji was convinced that he will be playing that role. But Mehboob Saab had other plans. After casting Nargis as mother, he decided to offer the role of Birju to Sunil Dutt. Dilipji was stunned with this unexpected development that he was not ready for. Mehboob Saab couldn't imagine Dilip playing Nargis's son.

Dilipji was not even in talking terms with Mehboob Saab while "Mother India" was getting ready. Eventually that movie was released and was both a commercial as well as artistic triumph for Mehboob Saab.

During this time Dilipji started looking to come up with a story that countered "Mother India." Finally he decided to write and develop himself the story of "Gunga Jumna" and then decided to make the movie himself. Because of this there are so many shades of similarities between "Mother India" and "Gunga Jumna." Both deal with injustices done to a family by a zamindar, both have two brothers one eventually becoming an outlaw and other who upholds law. When "Gunga Jumna" was released, it was also a huge commercial success. Instead of Dilipji running away with honors, it turned out that it was Vyjayanti Mala's performance that won critical acclaim. She won Filmfare's best actress performance for Dhanno's role. The movie's excellent photography also won a Filmfare award and so did the dialogue writer.

After many years, Yash Chopra made this same story (a mixture of "Mother India" and "Gunga Jumna") in modern settings as "Deewar." This again has the similar theme, injustices done by a mill owner to its labor force, a devoted mother raising two sons one of whom turns out "bad" and the other becomes a police officer who upholds the law. This movie catapulted Amitabh Bachchan to undeniable stardom.

Naushadji's music again is on the mark. Lataji has some beautiful songs. All songs are from a CD except the extended ones were ripped from a DVD. Here are details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Thanks Swarapriya. As usual your uploads are fantastic. Please note that the song "O chalia" has been sung by Asha and Rafi and not Lata and Rafi. Many thanks again

The version I have is 4 min 14 secs long. I don't know whether this is a full version or not.

Leader (1964)

After dissolving Filmistan banner, S. Mukherjee was in the process of opening Filmalaya banner. In between, he decided to make this big budget movie with Dilipji. The original story idea was by Dilip Kumar himself. On the surface it had all the ingredients to be a blockbuster. Dilipji was teamed with Vyjayanti Mala. Both were a hot pair coming off from back to back successes of Naya Daur and Gunga Jumna. Naushadji was at the helm to handle music. There was terrific supporting cast. The director was Ram Mukherjee, (son of S. Mukherjee?), who directed earlier "Hum Hindustani" that enjoyed moderate success. Ram also wrote the screenplay. (By the way, Ram Mukherjee is the father of now popular actress Rani Mukherjee.)

But for some reason or other, the production of movie dragged on. When eventually it was released, it proved very controversial because of its irreverant look at the politics. A mixture of comedy, satire, murder mystery, and the high voltage political drama was a perfect vehicle for Dilip Saab to exhibit his histroinics, but the movie still proved to be only a moderate success.

However, Dilip Saab was terrific. The incredibly talented actor he is, his overcharged performance fetched him another best actor Filmfare award. This was on the heel of similar awards for his performances in Kohinoor in 1960 and Gunga Jumna in 1961.

As usual, Naushadji's music was on the mark. There are some beautiful songs in this movie. All songs are from a CD except the extended version of "Apni Azadi." This is a contribution of the membership of this Forum.

Now for details of the songs, and songs themselves ...

One highlight of the songs is Mukesh ji gave playback to Dilipkumar and Rafi sahab gave playback to Raj Kapoor. All the 4 songs sung by Mukesh ji are superhit and still Naushad sahab rarely used Mukesh ji's voice in the coming years

Isn't that interesting? You're right. Did Rafi Saab ever sing for Raj Kapoor again? Mukesh did for Dilip Kumar. An immediate example is the song "Suhana Safar" in Bimal Roy's masterpiece, "Madhumati."

Swarapriya

One film which quickly comes to my mind is Jaali Note Do Ustaad starring Raj Kapoor and Madhubala. "Nazaronke teer maare kass kass kass..Ek nahin do nahin aanth nau dass..", MD was none other than rhythm king Omkar Prasad Nayyar !

wink.gif

I think any movie starring Raj Kapoor where music was given by OP, the songs will be sung by Rafi sahab. Rafi fans can come up with more names of films and songs where Rafi sahab gave playback to the showman.

Cheers
Parag

Couple of interesting point I had read

Dilip Kumar did not want Mukesh as the play back singer for Andaz. Naushad saab convinced him to trust
him that Mukesh was the best choice. The songs ofcourse were and still are super hits. Dilipkumar confirmed in an interview that he initally had reservation but once you heard Mukesh sing you could not help but hum along.

I think Mukesh beacme RK's voice after Andaz. Rafi did sing for RK in Nazarna, Joker and few other.
and most of music under OP as OP felt Mukeh's style did not suit his music. Of course there were exception
like chal akela from Sambhand etc.

Dil Diya Dard Liya (1966)

Here is another movie based on a famous English novel named "Wuthering Heights" by Emile Bronte. It was published in 1847 under a penname. The story tells passionate but thwarted tale of two ill-fated lovers. In 1939, famous Hollywood director William Wyler (of Ben-Hur among others) made this into an award winning popular movie with Merle Oberon and Sir Laurence Olivier. It was remade in 1992 with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes, but this time around the adoptation was tame.

When producer and director Kardar approached Dilipji with the story for this movie, he at once was fascinated with the subject. It was a complex character demanding many abilities as a performer. As a silent lover he has to give the performance with much restraint. When it demands to be a villainous has to bring in grey shades effortlessly. Finally when he has to show the pathos of a broken lover, he has to do this with elan. Dilip Saab pulls off all these magnificently.

It was rumored that Dilip Saab spent much time with Kardar Saab in developing his and the character played by Pran. As a result, this is one of those roles where Pran also gives an unforgettable performances.

Waheeda, the object of everyone's love interest in the story, is stunningly beautiful. As usually is the case with her, she exudes not only charm but pulls off her role matching scene for scene with Dilip Saab.

There are some beautiful songs Naushadji created to the lyrics penned by Shakeel Saab. Listen closely to the solos by Rafi Saab. Especially "Guzre Hain Aaj Ishq Mein" and "Koi Sagar Dil Ko". Only Rafi Saab can deliver such masterpieces. But my favorite happens to be the duet of Ashaji and Rafi Saab, "Sawan Aaye Ya Na Aaye". This is an absolutely sweet duet with Naushadji's imprint all over it.

Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...
