I was saddened to learn of Mary Travers' passing away. She was the lead singer of 60's protest genearation folk music singer trio ' Peter Paul & Mary'. Some of the memorable songs of this group' Don't think twice it's all right' 'Leaving on a jet plane' '500 miles' and many others are still fresh in memory. Many other singers and rock groups had their own versions of these songs but Pater Paul & Mary have left their indelible imprint on many of these songs and tunes. Those of us who were part of the 60's 'Protest Generation' in America have a special place in our hearts for music of the era and of rock and pop singers of those days. This trio along with dozens of other lumnaries of this movement have a special place in the memories of 'Baby Boomers' . She leaves us all poorer with her departure. Harjinder

Oh...dont know that Mary has passed away.. sad.gif
I love their songs..they are so simple and sweet. My altime favourite is ...500 miles..i got there through the hindi copy.." Jab koi baat bigad jaye' of Jurm !
Musicians never die..they just leave too much of their creations with us to pass it on to the next generations !

Here are pics of Mary and the Troupe...Peter Paul and Mary..

Hi
Aap ki line 'waqt ne kiya kya hseen sitam. Tum rahe na tum hum rahe na hum' ( Kaagaz Ke Phool?) is so appropriate in this instance. Mary in some of her last appearances was not the Mary from the sixties. She had changed too much in her physical appearance. She was 72 years old and had leukemia. By the way this group had split up in the 70's but did again work together many times for stage and other singing performances. Harjinder

Hi
Thanks for Pakeezah songs. Your contributions have made my threads 'Purani Yaadein' very interesting and varied. My emphasis both in Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi was mostly on the songs from the fifties. Now both of these threads are much more diverse.Harjinder

Harjinder,
Like you, I have always felt that the songs from the 50s were unmatched. However, sometimes we do come across songs from other decades which move us. I know the Pakeezah songs were mostly done in the 50s. So those probably "qualify" as those from the "Golden Age." I think there are many more like the songs from Anuradha Navrang etc which have the lilt and rhythm to be included in the "Golden Age." Finally I appreciate the opportunity to post on your forum. I also appreciate how voraciously you download my postings

Hi
At last count I have been out of India for 42+ years. Many of the Hindi,Urdu and Punjabi songs that I have been familiar with from my 20 plus years of life in India (before I left the country in 1967) are still my favorites. Many other songs in those languages that came out later are probably as good. Just to clarify matters, I read this little line in a newspaper in Chicago some years back . In effect it stated that best regarded music one hears is usually between the ages of five to twenty five. I was almost at that age ( a little younger) when I came to the U.S. I think that pretty much explains my fascination with songs from the fifties.
In America in sixties I was almost dazzled by the quality of music on the airwaves and many of the songs singers and groups that era are also my favorites. It took me some years to revert back to my earlier favorites from India. Internet websites like Hamara Forums and contributors like you have helped a great deal in reawakening my appetite for earlier favorites of mine in Hindi film music. Thanks for all your contributions. Harjinder
