QUOTE(Harjinder @ Apr 23 2011, 06:29 AM) *

Hi R & D
Thanks for your input. More than a month ago I purchased a new external hard drive and have been mostly using it for downloads.Switching between drives is cumbersome and. I tried using a Y type connector on the port but it did not work too well. Chances are good that I may have those songs on the older hard drive. I will look for those songs there.
Being human I guess some times I cannot see the broader perspective and try to make suggestions which may not always be practical. I guess this one might fall in that category. Harjinder

If it is USB.

you need a USB hub and power the external hard drives using an power adaptor.
obviously USB is very slow and should only use it for backups.

funny thing is prior to looking at youtube two days ago.
No one in HF could tell the name of the singers so your
query allowed me to fill in the blanks.

If your main hard drive is 5 year old then I would put a new one
and clone the data from old to new. 3.5" hard drive have 5 year life span.
2.5" have 3 year. Make sure you choose good manufacturer.
If hard drive gives read error, replace it immediately.
All this in caveat that you computer is not run in too much
internal temp or outside temp. electricity surge protection is very important
as well smooth electricity which is not available in India, you have
to buy extra equipment to protect your electronics.

Hi R & D
Thanks again for your help. The drives both new (1.5 TB) and the old one (500 GB) have 'Seagate' as the manufacturer's name. I will have to read specs to see the size (i.e. 3.5" or 2.5") of the drives. By the way U.S.A. is presently the country of my domicile so hopefully I have fewer of the power and quality related problems. It's nice of you to offer your helpful comments to an I.T.knowledge challenged guy like me. I do have grown children who are pretty well versed in I.T.but they explain to me all this stuff in about 5 seconds when they should spend at least 15 minutes doing that. Harjinder
