May I first make it clear that this is NOT an obit-tribute. I won’t presume to go there. That would be very disrespectful to Nayyar sahab, for he was someone who didn’t care a damn for ‘honours’ – no one could honestly say he pined away for them anyway.

He lived a full life never mind what the world thought of him – and he was happy.
His music did the same for his countless fans.

I love the fact that he was a rebel, that he broke the old staid musical traditions and established new ones in their place.
All his tunes, melodies, compositions had that mint-fresh quality – moulded to perfection, just like the Master intended.

Whether it was ‘Preetam Aan Milo’ in CH Atma’s sonorous voice which I rank as one of the most heart-stopping melodies ever dreamed up, or the heart-wrenching song of a wasted life ‘Chain Se Hum Ko Kabhi’ in Asha ji’s pathos charged voice ( the reasons for that are not too far to seek ) and nearly all the songs that came to Rafi sahab; they all shared that natural, unpretentious quality – so rare in every age.

OP Nayyar was an innovator, a perfectionist by self-admission, a composer whose creativity was boundless.

And more importantly someone who was honest beyond candour. The last part appeals to me as much as his music ever will.

This composition of his is a particular favourite.
