here is the song 3:19/126

Lots of thanks, Lakshmi, for this nice upload.

Friends, while this song is credited for Rafi Saab and Geeta Dutt, I can hear a third voice in the second and certainly in the third antaras. Is it that Rafi Saab has modified his voice that way in the second/third antaras, because he might have been singing for two different actors?

Any ideas?

Venkat

That cannot be rafi saab wacko.gif

The third voice is S.D.Batish ( Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish, the famous Hindustani vocalist ). smile.gif

Sajdah

This is pandit husnlal himself and not pandit s d batish. In the same movie, he starts the song "woh aur zamana tha yeh aur zamana hai". Pandit s d batish sings the second para in that song

Mahesh ji, perhaps not all would agree with you.

Here, take a look at these links, please.

http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?s=&a...st&p=156182

A quick search of the SD Batish forum came up with this.

It seems this song was uploaded earlier on a thread titled ‘Shiv Dayal Batish, the singer, some songs sung by Batish ji’ by another Mahesh ji in 2005.

He asserts and I quote him “a song from the film hamari manzil[1949] sung by s d batishji along with geetaji and rafi sahab.the records credit only geetaji and rafi sahab for the song;but there is a third voice which most experts identify as batishsahab.
music is by husnlal bhagatram who used s d batishji quite often.lyrics are by rajendra krishan.
the song is ''andhere se na dar.....kaante banegi kaliyan''.
happy listening,
Mahesh”

It would be interesting to find out whether he still holds the same view in 2007. Is he still active on HF?

http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?s=&a...st&p=156245

In response to Mahesh ji’s post on the same thread, Ashwin Batish – Batish sahab’s son and the one who looks after the website confirms that it is indeed his dad’s voice in the third stanza.

He seemed quite confident about that.

And I quote him “That is my father on the last verse.

I wonder whether he still thinks that. The post I quoted was of 2005, and it's quite possible that events might have happened since then to make him think otherwise.

http://batish.com/sd/filmography/hamaarimanzil/

Incidentally this song (as well as the other one you mentioned ) are both credited to Pandit SD Batish on his website.

Thank you, Sajdah Ji and Mahesh Ji, for the interesting search for truth regarding the Hamari Manzil song. Sajdah ji, of course, there is another Mahesh Ji in HF who is also a very senior member.

The balance of evidence now seems to be in favor of Sajdah Ji's proponent, S.D.Batish!

Many many thanks, USR Ji. No doubt, this is not a rare song by any reckoning. But, it felt as if it was a very long time since one heard this last.

SS Ji, all I can say is that this is one of the Maestro's great many great songs! And I cannot miss the similarity of style in composing by Ghulam Mohammed Ji and Naushad Ji. It is probably because GM was once an Assistant to Naushad.

Thanks again for this song.

I still maintain third voice is not of pandit s d batish it is pandit husnlal.

...listen to the song once again....khusiyon ki arzoo kar... (In venkatji's terms...second antra)..
is pandit husnlal.
...haare huye sipahi ( the third antra or last verse as ashwin said)....is in the voice of pandit s d batish......

To put it straight... there are four singers...rafi, geeta, husnlal and s d batish in that order.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO RELY ON YOUR OWN EARS laugh.gif
It may be very difficult for those ears who have not listened much of these two
gentlemen. Of course pandit husnlal sang very few songs..he was
a master violin player..

Re:Hamari Manzil song, Kaaten Banenge Kaliyan

Mahesh Ji, you seem to have a point. I agree that the second and third antaras appear to have been sung by different singers. The second Antara starting with "Khushiyon Ki Arzoo Kar" seems to be in a voice that is different from Rafi's voice, but somewhat close to his. However, the third Antara(Haare Huye Sipahi) has a more dissimilar and a sort of trembling voice.

That was why in my initial query, I used the expression, "in the second and certainly in the third antaras".

So, if this is what it is, Rafi Saab just sang the opening Mukhda independently, Geeta the first Antara, Husnlal the second Antara and S.D.Batish the third Antara!

Venkat

I have changed many views in life since my childhood, but not my view of Rafi Saab as the God-sent Gandharva who visited this Earth briefly to spread ultimate ecstasy among genuine music-lovers!
