If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.

Jumping back to 1956. Me disorganised wunly. sad1.gif

Missed this beauty earlier. Then saw Dharmvirji's recent ul and remembered. Such a LOVELY song. BTW Dharmvirji se hi pehle file mila and it is 3.06 mins. His new file is 3.27. Speed is different. Me uling the older version cleaned a bit. unsure.gif

Meri kashti jahan doobi
Main us sahil ko roti hoon cry.gif

I feel like crying when I hear such songs. Asha made her mark, true, she is amazing, there is no one like her. But if she had got better songs, what might have been? If ppl had taken her talent more seriously..... sigh.gif

Gotta thank Dharmvirji here for so many beauties that he has brought to our notice. Kash aap HMV ke owner hote. rolleyes.gif

Priyaji,

My own two cents worth.

While I in no way argue on Asha's abilities, I somehow feel that things were as they should be. She did get to sing more songs during that period than any other singer in the industry. But yes, the people who ruled the skies preferred Lata for their best songs. Which again I feel was as it should be. I mean, for all her brilliance, I cant imagine Asha providing the same depth to a beauty like CR-Lata's "Katate hain dukh me din". Going by the same token, we can similarly lament the lack of oppurtunities for good singers like C.H.Atma, Shankardas Gupta, Meena Kapoor, Mubarak Begum, etc.

Pl forgive me if I have offended in anyway. That was not my intention at all.

Regards,
Shriram

U have offended. mad.gif

But U have Ur opinion and I have mine. Lata got the grooming that Asha did not. Lata was prefered by the better mds. Taught and schooled and trained by them--not in music but in the nuances of film singing and expression and poetry. Asha sang loads of songs in the 50s but if U listen to them, how many are worth cherishing? I am sorry to say but a Chitragupt or SN tripathi best is not often like an Anil Biswas or Madan Mohan best. Also the orchestras are limited. Maybe the time and effort also was less for these B grade films.

Take any Asha classic and point out how she has failed--I doubt if anyone can. When she got a good song, she did justice to it.
It is like saying Lata could never sing Asha's cabaret or club songs. Her voice is thinner and I do feel Asha is better with the oomph she adds but can we be certain that if Lata were in Asha's shoes without the luxury of choice and 3 hungry mouths to feed, she would not have developed all those singing skills? They are both blessed and great artists. The difference lies in the opportunities they got. I personally feel Asha is better at semiclassical. But I am no expert and it is only my opinion.

I also feel that after the era of heavy singing that maybe lacked finesse, lata was a revolution. So much so that everything she did became a standard. And nothing could match up. Bec it just had to be Lata. Suman came close in voice but not in singing and Asha was grudgingly called a versatile singer but her voice was not Lata's and her style was not Lata's. Lata just became an icon--the absolute for an entire generation.

I notice a difference when we talk to ppl from different age grps. For those above 50 what I wrote above holds true. Also somehow whether they realise it or not the whole thing of 'good' songs and the inferior singer, the club song singer is ingrained in their consciousness.
When U take my age grp for the most part U like what U like. Both singers are great and U judge without a background of filmy knowledge or era prejudices. With/without that I say--Asha got mediocre songs for the most part. Lata got the best in HFM--more than any singer, male or female.

U take the youngsters and most of them haven't a clue who these singers are/were. Some hype abt them, pata nahin kyun. And they hardly have the patience or the ears to listen. After all can any pre 60 song be blasted from a fancy stereo system during a party or be the rage at a disco? If remixed they hear it. And like it. For the songs were good. sad1.gif There are exceptions like so many we see on hf but for the most part those under 20 hardly care a damn abt who Lata or Asha are and what might be the equations of their relationship or singing. sigh.gif

Continuing the thread without Ooonz. sad1.gif

Moving into 1958.

I love this song--very simple tune, limited instrumental accompaniment. But has a lilt and is well sung--not a shed bucket of tears kind of sad song--just wistful.
