Let' start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When U read U begin with ABC
When U sing U begin with Ashaji, Ashaji
The first three notes just happen to be AB, see? laugh.gif

Let us take our memory to 1949, the year when Ashaji started her HFM career in full sway with several solos for many important MDs, the year she first sang for Khayyamsaab, the year I believe our benign contributor was born!!! biggrin.gif

One of the few early numbers (solo # 5 in fact) of Ashaji available in good quality, sung in the older slightly heavy style.
Song length: 2:50

Can we just have the songs? Without the limericks and wisecracks? mad.gif Huh! Can we? Can we?

Like this:

The infectious rhythm of O. P. Nayyar:

If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.

Before moving to the next ul, lemme mention a song I am quite fond of, which is not included for reasons of sound quality. From the film Madhubala -- mujhe maar gayi oh balam teri na na na, possibly her first light ched chaad ka gaana (yes the Ashaji known for her peppy numbers made her debut with more than a dozen sad or sombre songs).

Aur ab, Unni ka hi KD file unhi ke thread par; this song was selected by Ashaji for one of the 'in her own voice' series. Still with the old style of singing. Quaint and cute.

Skipping 1951 (the only nice song I have in good quality is humein chodke na jaana from Pyaar Ki Batein) and moving to 1952 where there are some songs I am very fond of. One is that divinely romantic song wub.gif with Hemant Kumar (woh chand nahin hai dil hai kisi deewane ka) where Asha joins in with the concluding antara.

Here is a beauty of a song provided by Mahesh (Drsaab). I fell in love with this simple love ditty the minute I heard it. Hope those who have not heard it before will love it too.

Priya:

There are some songs that one likes at the very first hearing. Then there are others that grow on you. In the 60's we'd say that the tunes of S-J were in the first category and those of SDB in the latter! Some songs we like just because we are familiar with them. I had not heard "Thi Jinse Pal Bhar Ki Pehchaan", but I believe I'll come to like this one after listening to it a few times. Thanks!

If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.

True abt liking some songs bec they are familiar. I often wonder-- a song like piya tu ab to aa ja--is it really a lovely song? The singing is SUPERB and the energy is great but apart from that? But bachpan se har Asha collection mein tha so U take it for granted that it one of her best.
I remember being exuberant abt this song 'thi jinse pal bhar ki' bec I got it before I came to HF and started getting music from lp dealers. Apart from the HMV releases had not heard any of Asha's songs. So this really caught me bec it is so simple and yet different from all the usual Asha songs. Also, I have a soft corner for old world songs with minimum orchestral interludes.

I feel it would be an unfair comparison to judge "Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja" against say, "Pyaas Kucch Aur Bhi Bhadka Di"! biggrin.gif One had the energy and spirit of Pancham-da and Asha-ji clap1.gif , the other had the exquisite lyrics of Kaifi Azmi and the melodious tuning of Khayyam to complement the singers bow.gif . Each to its own, different situations, different moods, different times, yet both landmarks of HFM.

There is a place in our listening for "Dum Maro Dum", just as there is for "Meri Baat Rahi Merey Mann Mein".

If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.
