By the way I also use HF for another purpose. Whenever I used to call India, I would always have to guess the time. Now I just have to click on any user who is in India and get to know the time and make my phone calls accordingly....Mother ko midnight mein nahi jaga dete hain abhi!!!!!   )

Would someone confirm that "Indian Standard Time" (IST) is an artificial creation? That, in reality there would be a one-hour difference between Bombay and Calcutta (the Mumbai and Kolkata of today). And to avoid this time difference, an artificial "time line" was drawn vertically down the centre of the map of the country, which accounts for the 30 mins, e.g. GMT + 5 & 1/2.

No wonder we are never punctual! (except Asha Bhosle. There! I've justified this post).

Yes it passes through Allahabad.
On the contrary, I remember in 1998 when lata ji (Asha ji's eldest sister, there I justified the post too!!! came to chicago to celebrate her 70th B'day, she acused americans not being punctual. she said she was sitting prepared since 5 and the function started at 7:00 PM!!!

Isn't that one of the reasons why test matches have to start early in Kolkata? If I remember my Geography correctly, the IST is based on 72 1/2 meridian longtitude.

In fact it's 82.5 longitude (15 degrees for an hour), so IST is 5.5 hours ahead. It does pass thru Allahabad, my hometown, which was quite an important centre for the Brits.
Getting to be a bit of a digression from the usual discussion on KD though!!
