(QUOTE)...if U look at most heroines--Rekha and Sadhna come to mind right now--Asha sang their first songs and then once they became popular Lata took over... (UNQUOTE)

Mind mentioning them?

Priya:

I downloaded those b/w pictures. They were just great.

You know, when I joked about "retouched" pictures, it was a flash-back from Asha-ji's own narration of OPN knocking on the door, her appearance, and his mistaking her identity. Also, since I had the good fortune to see her in person (when she asked me for my autograph tongue.gif ), I know her looks.

She has a sparkling personality. No denying that.

Cheers, as always!

Do relate the OPN story again--I remember reading it somewhere but have forgotten it.

Of course, I didn't meet her. I thought you would have caught on by the mention of her asking for my autograph. I have only seen her performing on stage.

As the story goes, OPN had heard her songs but had not seen Asha-ji before he called on her at her house (perhaps to sign her for recording). He knocked at the door, and it was opened by a woman whom OPN mistook for the servant-maid. So he asked to meet Asha-ji. Imagine his surprise when the "woman" said "I am Asha".

You might already be familiar with another little anecdote that Asha-ji has narrated. Prior to the recording of a song, in order to get her to sing the song with the right effect, SDB started briefing her with the words, "Aasa, tum samjho ke tum Helen hai". Upon which Asha promptly replied, "Not in this lifetime"!

It was SDB again who explained to her the effect he wanted for the song "Raat akeli hai" --- that of a child who whispers in the mother's ear and then startles her with a high-pitched "coooooo". Notice how the song starts off on hushed low notes and then suddenly switches to virtually a shriek.

Air India had in their in-flight entertainment a very interesting program presented by Asha-ji, in which she speaks about her interaction with other singers, e.g. Geet Dutt, Mohd. Rafi, etc. I was lucky to hear it, but it is not available on sale.

Priya:

A few years ago, Asha-ji and Amit Kumar performed together in a series of concert tours all over the USA. One show was in the near-by city of Stamford and we attended it along with a bunch of our "desi" friends. I had posted in BBM an interesting anecdote she narrated about a duet with Kishore-da. And another one, as I recollect, in the Lata forum. If only you had kept up with "required reading", you would be on top of all this by now!

Cheers!

Unni , I do remember that tour of hers . It was a super hit show everywhere in USA. OH MY GOD , can you believe , we saw huge crowd of fans waiting out the hall even after the show was over , as they could not get the ticket as show being sold out even before months it was gonna start. Later on I read that when one of the press correspondent asked them why standing out for hours even when the show was already sold out , the answer was "Who knows if we might get lucky , even if its last few minutes of the show".

Believe me she is big crowd puller having a huge fan club. After that show she only visited only once near my town or maybe in USA, which unfortunately I missed being out of town.

In short no words could describe her popularity , maybe the only artist to have ever worked with so many western names like Code Red , Boy George & Luscombe.

One Giant Leap was named the album of the year in 2002 and a wonderful song, "I Love the way you dream". Here is the link if anyone of you have not heard so far :-

Priya:

That is precisely the problem. IMHO, people who stick only to their 'own" forums tend to get claustrophobic. Kabhi-kabhi khidki khola bhi karo.

Merey ko dekho. I inflict myself across forums, spreading trouble and misery all around.

There is no fun in tormenting just a few. Genius lies in tormenting all.

Cheers!

Ok ok, just one more post since you twist my arm so....

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Please don't mind me Priya ji, for I am a bit crazy, have a silly sense of humor!

Here's this song that I just heard today for the first time. Let's make it interesting. I will just quote the begininng (Sthayi/ Mukhda.... if my music 101 is getting me anywhere...) you guys identify the movie and you shall have it (if you want it) . No cheating! No referring to the Internet/ Catalogues as yet; just from memory!

"Jaadugar qatil, haazir hai mera dil, tu dil mein bhar de pyar, bhala ho tera tujhko teri naujawani ki kasam."
