Good old 'rom' had offered to send me the First-Day Cover of the stamps issued in tribute to the legends. When I mentioned to Priya that I need to give him my address in India to send it to, she came up with a cover for me! bow.gif

While the Government of India must be applauded for their gesture in bringing out commemorative stamps in memory of these four singers, I personally felt disgusted that the Government ignored Talat mahmood, who belonged to the panthean of 6 great male singers who enthralled us during 50s and 60s with their immortal songs. One can understand the ommission of Manna Dey since he was the only singer who was still alive when this set of 4 stamps wes brought out. The ommission of Talat mahmood was in real bad taste. Incidently I am not unermining Mahendra Kapoor in any manner. He too gave us many memorable songs from late 50s onwards.

Fully agree with you; Talat-sahab belongs to the pantheon of great singers and fully merits the honour. For that matter, Lala-ji has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, but doesn't Asha-ji deserve at least a Padma Shri? sad1.gif

As for Manna Dey and Mahendra Kapoor, I guess living persons are not honoured with the issuance of stamps.

Can anyone clarify: was a postage stamp issued in honour of K. L. Saigal?

Yes, a postage stamp has been issued in honour of Kundanlal Saigal. I believe one has been issued in honour of Pankaj Mullick as well as B.N.Sircar (Legendary owner of New Theatres) too.

Well it does not surprise me as I found out that many people consider the modulations in Talat Saab's voice to be shaky quivering!!! angry2.gif angry2.gif
.....not many consider Talat to be among the greatests!!! But to me he is at the same level of Hemant and Rafi!!! who are my topmost among male play-backs in Hindi cinema......But I guess democracy rules!!!
