We have had many qawwali masters in the rich legacy of HFM, most notable amongst them being Roshan. To me, Pancham was the best modern-day qawwali composer. He mastered this genre so much so that he dared to experiment in his qawwali compositions by being unorthodox in his approach and yet sticking to the traditional roots of a qawwali.

Most of the time whenever Pancham created a song in this genre he turned towards Rafi saab as he was the only singer who could do full justice to this type of song.

This next qawwali is one of the best qawwali's in my opinion that Pancham ever created. Excellent singing by Rafi saab as well as Bhupinder and Asha Bhosle. The highlight of this qawwali is yet again the treatment. Notice how Pancham has infused a middle-eastern feel at the start of the qawwali which was great creativity and then the excellent rhythm takes over the song. The chorus support is great, the song has a great tune and flow. and we have the middle-eastern feel throughout the song. Enjoy this great gem !

Kya Takalluf Hai Wallah
Film: Jail Yaatra
Year: 1981
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Pancham on Teesri Manzil:

Uske Baad Meri Jo Badi Film, Badi Yaani Ki Jiska "star cast" Bada Ho, Woh Film Thi 'Teesri Manzil'. Is Film Se Mujhe Naam Aur "recognization" Mila. Sab Log Bolne Lage Ki Yeh Alag "type" Ka Music Deta Hai, "modern type" Ka. Is Film Ka Pehla Gaana Banakar Main Ashaji Aur Rafi Sahab Ke Ghar Gaya, Unse Kaha Ki Yeh Gaana 'producer. director', Shammi Kapoor, Sabhi Ko Bahut Pasand Hai. Rafi Sahab Ko Kaha Ki Aap Ko Ismein Shammi Kapoor Ke "style" Mein Gaana Padega. Dono Ne Gaana Sunkar Kaha Ki Is Gaane Ke Liye To 4/5 "rehearsal" Dene Padenge. Yeh Sunkar Main Bahut "proud feel" Karne Laga Ki Itne Bade Singers Log Keh Rahen Hain Ki Mere Geet Ke Liye 4/5 "rehearsals" Dene Padenge, To Suniye Yeh Gaana....."O Haseena Zulfon Wali..."....To Yeh Tha "duet" Jise Ashaji aur Rafi Sahab Ne Gaaya Tha.

I would rate this as one of the best songs of Rafi saab for Pancham. A very beautiful ghazal-type composition, Dharmendra singing to Meena Kumari on their suhaag raat. Rafi saab is at his softest best here, a nice tune and excellent music.

Next two songs on request of Humble Rafi bhai:

In 1994 soon after Pancham's passing away, Gulzar came up with a tribute album to RD in which he shared his memories of moments with Pancham. He handpicked a list of songs written by him and tuned by Pancham and there was commentary from Gulzar about each song. The film Ghar had other great songs, but Gulzar chose this Asha-Rafi duet to go on the tribute album. Here was his commentary on this song:

Pancham tumhaare saath seriously baithkar gaana likhna bada mushkil hota tha. Itne sanjeeda kism ke gaane banate hue bhu tumhare pranks khatam nahin hote the. Bahut serious ek gaana tha jis par tumne kaha tha mujhse, "Tum kyon band botal ki tarah serious baithe ho".

Botal Se Ek Baat
Film: Ghar
Year: 1978
Lyrics: Gulzar

This next song is an absolute gem, a philosophical song set to a good tune, another example of a superb composition this great combination produced in the seventies.

This next song is Rare, sung by Asha, Rafi & Kishore from a film that is known by two titles. There was a Marathi film released in the late seventies that had a similar tune.

Pancham created an absolute gem here, a Goan type folk song, all the three singers are great, the tune is excellent !

The file size is quite big since the song is in crystal clear quality at 256kbps.

A must download !!!

What is well known is that one of Pancham's favourite music directors was his father S.D.
Burman
whom he used to assist for quite a long time. What is not well known is that his favourites apart
from his father were none other than the great Shankar Jaikishan.

He used to love and admire their music and was inspired from Jaikishan's jazz compositions. In fact if you
look at Pancham's early compositions, you will notice there is quite a bit of SJ influence in the style of the
compositions.

Pancham once said that SJ's Rajkumar (1964) was in his opinion one of the most magnificent scores
in HFM. He found the variety in the album simply staggering.

After Teesri Manzil released, Pancham received telephonic compliments from Jaikishan and was dancing with
joy for days telling everyone about Jai's compliments.

beautiful !!! fruitful commentary princeali saheb. many many thanks for creating such a wonderful
thread. bow.gif u know when i listened to the teesri manzil songs( a long back ofcourse ), i thought
it would be shankar jaikishan, later i came to know it was none other than r.d. burman(pancham) ...
that shows he could recreate other's style equally well in addition to his own compositions.
here r 2 songs of that movie, i don't know if it is a repost.
---------------
here is a little note about r. d. burman:

learnt sarod from Ustad Akbar Ali Khan. When he was nine years old, he composed his first song, Aye meri topi
palat ke aa, which his father used in the film Funtoosh (1956). The tune of the song Sar jo tera chakraaye was
composed by him as a kid. His father loved the tune and included it in the soundtrack of Guru Dutt's Pyaasa.
As a child, Pancham also played the mouth organ in the famous song Hai apna dil to aawara (from film Solva
saal - 1958, starring Dev Anand). Pancham began his music career as an assistant to his father.
----------------
as somebody said above that pancham is in the 5 best mds of bollywood, i guess they would be

1. shankar jaikishan
2. madan mohan
3. s.d. burman
4. laxmikant pyarelal
5. r.d burman(pancham)

next will be:

1. noushad
2. salil chaudhury
3. anil biswas
4. c. ramachandra
5. ravindra jain
6. kalyan ji anand ji
7. usha khanna
.... and ....

what say ? i am not sure. and the best triplets will be ?

1. sj, rafi, shammi kapoor
2. pancham, kishore, rajesh khanna

Jo Milte hain, voh nahi milte
Aur Jo Nahi Milte, Vohin Vaastav mein milte hai
Kaaran jo hai, voh nahi hai
Aur jo nahi hai, vohin hai.
Ye keval Shabdo ki heraa-pheri nahi hai
Aur heraa-pheri hain bhi
Yehin Darshan hai
Aur isi hone naa hone, milne naa milne ke beech mein
maayaa kaa samudra hai
