A new week brings us to these next two beautiful songs which I rank amongst the very best Lata-Rafi duets ever created. Both these songs are from Rajesh Khanna films in the 70's.
Pancham had very talented comtemporaries. One of them were Laxmikant Pyarelal whose fort was the dholak. If there were any MD's who made this particular instrument popular and used it on a consistent basis, it was L-P. Pancham on the other hand did not use the dholak that much. He mostly used to create rhythms on the Tumba, Duggi, Madal, Bongo, Congo, Tabla and other percussion instruments. The story goes that one of L-P's musicians pointed out to Pancham that the dholak was mainly L-P's forte and they were the masters at using this instrument. Pancham took this as a challenge to create a song that would show he was as good in the usage of the dholak. He then discussed this with Maruti Rao Keer who was one of his assistants as well as the head of his rhythm department on how to make a song based on the Dholak only. According to Maruti Rao Keer: 1) The Dholak beats of this song were made first 2) Pancham made the song later based on that Taal Can you believe this ?. Most of the time, the tune of the song is created first and then the rhythm and everything associated with the song comes after but in this case it is the reverse. This is a very interesting aspect and shows that Pancham really wanted to show everyone that he could use the dholak effectively. The tune is excellent and amazing singing by Lata ji and Rafi saab. Listen to the dholak in this song, its mindblowing !! Kahe Ko Bulaya Film: Humshakal Year: 1974 Lyrics: Anand Bakshi Prince Ali |

If ever anyone has any doubt about Pancham's classical abilities, they should listen to this song. Pancham proved that he was as good in composing classical-based songs as he was western-based songs.
This song showcases both the sarod and the tabla (two instruments that Pancham learned when he was young). The sarod has been woven in so beautifully into the song and the tabla is excellent. I don't know why, but this song gives me a haunting feeling, the tune, the aura, the music, the voices of Lata ji and Rafi saab, its just a very soulful composition. Nagma Hamara Film: Bundalbaaz Year: 1976 Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Prince Ali |

When you hear this song, you will feel as if you are somewhere in a jungle surrounded by village tribes. The song is very unique, one of those "different" Pancham numbers. Excellent singing by Rafi saab with a catchy rhythm. This song is a great example of creative use of a chorus where Pancham has very nicely combined the background chant of "Naag Devta" to compliment Rafi saab's voice.
Also look out for the other African-type chants in the song, a great song ! Naag Devta Film: Shalimar Year: 1978 Lyrics: Anand Bakshi Prince Ali |

Another very nice Rafi-Lata duet by Pancham, the highlights of this song are the rhythm as well as the awesome singing by the Maharaja and Maharani of HFM. The music is also very catchy, great orchestration. The song was shot on Snajay Khan and Mumtaz.

Thanks Deewani ji, I appreciate it !
This film had all female numbers by Lata and Asha except for this duet between Asha and Rafi, again one of those exotic type fun-filled songs. Notice the rhythm, typical Pancham style. Tathaiya Ne Dank Mara Film: Jal Mahal Year: 1980 Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Prince Ali |

Again one of those off-beat RD-Rafi compositions, Rafi saab does full justice to the song.

This is the only Kishore-Lata-Rafi song that Pancham ever made in his career. Nice singing by all three artists with a cool tune.

What is well known is that one of Pancham's favourite music directors was his father S.D. Burman whom he used to assist for quite a long time. What is not well known is that his favourites apart from his father were none other than the great Shankar Jaikishan.
He used to love and admire their music and was inspired from Jaikishan's jazz compositions. In fact if you look at Pancham's early compositions, you will notice there is quite a bit of SJ influence in the style of the compositions. Pancham once said that SJ's Rajkumar (1964) was in his opinion one of the most magnificent scores in HFM. He found the variety in the album simply staggering. After Teesri Manzil released, Pancham received telephonic compliments from Jaikishan and was dancing with joy for days telling everyone about Jai's compliments. Prince Ali |
