Prince-Bhai

Nice thread and songs!

I have a RDB interview on video where he mentions the musical sittings of Tessri Manzil. When he played the Nepalese tune first up Shammi K rejected instantly because Jaikishan had already played this tune to him in a music sitting for another film.

He was very hesitant with RDB scoring the music as he was replacing Shammi's favourites SJ. He only okayed RDB when he went to the recording studio and heard what he thought was Rafi & Asha rehearsing Aaja aaja mein hoon pyar tera.....he instantly loved the rock n roll feel of the song and asked RDB to record it straight away, thats when RDB informed him that the song has been recored already.

Interesting fact is that Shammi K later chose RDB for his maiden directoral venture Manoranjan even though Shankar was still around.regs

Thanks Saj bhai for the interesting piece of information.

I don't know why RD and Shammi didn't team up after the successful TM when Shammi was still going strong as an actor, I am sure there would have been more great songs they would have produced together.

After Jaikishan passed away, most of SJ's big banners and loyalists went to RDB and with Shankar not being the same after Jai's passing, I think Shammi felt RD was a better option.

Cheers

Princeali Bhai, do you have the full version of "MIAN NE SAU BAAR KHYALON KE BANAYE KHAAKE" from the same film Parchhaiyan 1972. This is also the Rafi-RDB combo. I have the song but it is faded out at the end of 2nd Stanza. Please u/l.

Siddiqui bhai,

I have not come across this song as being from RDB's Parchhaiyan (1972) unless there is another song. Most anthology's and Earthmusic mention that there are only two Rafi songs from this film. Can someone please clarify. It could be from a different film mellow.gif

Deewani ji, Thanks for contributing to this thread. I have another version of "Har Jalwa Tera Jalwa..." but the opening piece by Chandrashekar Gadgil is missing so its nice to get a version with that part. It is a very nice composition, I think it didn't receive as much credit as it deserves considering the film 'Harjaee' had other great gems as well. Also, I remember that list of RD-Rafi songs that you brought up from a long time ago.

This next song is one of my absolute favourite RD-Rafi songs. RD showed remarkable courage in the way he handled this song. I think most composers with these types of lyrics would have turned it into a nice romantic mushy song but Pancham converted it into a fast-paced love ballad. The highlight of this song besides the excellent bongos is the electric guitar which leaves a great impression on the listener.

Aye Jaan-e-Wafa
Film: Chhalia
Year: 1973
Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan

Prince Bhai:

Either you have misquoted Asha or she's got the facts wrong. First of all, the Nepali song is not a folk song but a romantic duet. Secondly, the wording is Eh Kanchha Ma Lai Sun Ko Tara Khasai Deuna (meaning: "Eh Kanchha, bring me down a golden star"). I used to have a low bitrate clip of this song but unfortunately it has been moved to another CD or HD. If anyone is interested I will look for it during the weekend and u/l it next week.

Thanks.

Binod.

Binod ji,

The piece is from an Asha Bhosle interview and I quoted whatever was said in it. I am not aware if the Nepali tune is a folk song or a romantic song but it would be nice if you could upload it.

Cheers

Will do so ASAP. Meanwhile please exercise some patience. Thanks.

Binod.

I have always loved the song Poocho Na Yaar Kya Hua from 'Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai' (1981). There are two versions of this song, one is "Bolo Bolo Kuch To Bolo..." which is mostly a Rafi saab solo song, where Asha ji sings a bit at the start. The other is the duet version by Asha ji and Rafi saab, an excellent gem from Pancham with a great tune.

In one of Asha's interviews that I read, she shared memories of her life and music with Pancham. She mentioned how they once left for Nepal to get inspiration for a song. Watching the Nepalese girls go by humming a Nepali folk tune inspired him to come up with the number Poocho Na Yaar Kya Hua. In the duet version, you can hear the Nepali chant, which adds to the beauty of the song.

Another example of Pancham's great creativity ! smile1.gif

Thanks for the thread Prince - am thoroughly enjoying the songs all have u/loaded.
Thought I would mention two favorites that came to mind while going through the thread - the title song from Mukti - "pyaar hai ik nishaan kadmon ka" (I only have the bangla version sung by RD) and a lovely duet "Aa raat jaati hai chupkesey mil jaayein dono" from Benaam - would love to have that one....

Hi Shaibaal, its my pleasure !

The next two songs are Shaibaal's requests:

This duet in my opinion is one of the best western-based ballads Pancham ever made. The music is just beautiful from the violins and guitar to the great rhythm. Pancham also goes a step further in his fantastic and innovative use of the saxophone to start the second interlude, just amazing. Asha ji and Rafi saab are at their best in this song, which was filmed on Helen and the Big B.

This song is a masterpiece, I would say it probably would rank as one of the Top 10 RD-Rafi songs of all time. The lyrics are very philosophical. Rafi saab does full justice to the gem and as always sings it with feeling. Pancham's showed he was a versatile composer with this song.

The song is in two parts, with Part 2 being a small continuation of Part 1.

Film: Mukti
Year: 1977
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Rafi saab sings with Danny Denzongpa in this song from a film that starred Rishi Kapoor and Danny D. himself.

The film was noted for Amit Kumar's hit "Bade Ache Lagte Hai...". Apart from that song, this Rafi patriotic number was also popular.
