Here is a video of Pancham Live, where he is playing the tune of Rafi-Lata's Lehra Ke Aaya Hai (Waris) on the harmonica. This concert was held in Dubai, excellent stuff from Pancham, he was a fantastic harmonica player:

I had mentioned Pancham talking about Tumhein Dekha Hai (Chandan Ka Palna) from a Jamaila Program on Vividh Bharti program. A veteran journalist posted more about it on mohdrafi.com. Here is the extract:
They had got Pancham as the guest that day. Speaking about Rafi, he made it clear that Rafi was the one and only singer who could polish an uncut diamond (he meant a song) to make it dazzling. I can quote his words: "Us waqt mai Chandan Ka Palna compose kar raha tha. Mai Rafisaab ko (Tumhe Dekha Hai Maine Gulsita Mein) gaane ke liye bulaya. Aur jab gaana record hokar suna to believe nahi kar sakta tha". Prince Ali |

This concert was held in Dubai, excellent stuff from Pancham, he was a fantastic harmonica player: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du54paUkRFQ Thanks for this excellent clip. Any true music fan will not fail to appreciate & revere RD Burman. Immortal diamonds like him make the HF industry very proud. Such a simple clip indicates he was modest & friendly - the way he asks that other chap to stay with him on stage and what to sing. You can also see what wonders he did with a simple instrument the harmonica! Just about anyone can play the harmonica, it is a simple instrument, but when he plays it - it becomes something else! I genuinely feel sad to know he is no longer with us when he should have been around. That clip is somewhat depressing because you see how much he aged when he was still young (mid 40s isn't old) due to the MEMORYLESS, fickle, CRUEL, philistine industry ruled by producers who have often don't have sense of music. The impact of music blockbusters like 1942 A Love Story or Veer Zaara (Madan Mohan) go to show that music today is no good not because we lack good singers or the listeners but because we don't have the RD Burmans and Madan Mohans of the world - the MDs! Thanks again for the clip. |

I have always been fascinated with Pyar Hai Ik Nishan Qadmon Ka from Mukti (1977). In my view, this is one of Pancham's most finest creations ever, certainly a desert-island masterpiece, from a lyrical, singing, melody, depth point of view. Furthermore, I would also rank this among the very finest of Rafi's 70's songs as well, such is the quality of this composition.
This song is the Hindi/Urdu version of the Bengali song Modhumash Jaaye sung by Pancham himself. There are two parts to this haunting song. The opening drone of the sitar right away suggests a classical atmosphere, and reminds one of the opening of Lata's version of Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon from Mehbooba. The rhythm is great, played in a creative taal, along with his trademark guitar providing the bass (as he did with his other classical songs too). While on the rhythm/guitar aspect, I especially love the use of the guitar accompanying the main rhythm, something that became Pancham's trademark, the usage of chords along with the taal, and this has been showcased very well in this song. The orchestration is excellent with great use of the accordion (notice the zingy effect), flute, veena, guitar, sitar and violins which give a classical feeling as well as a philosophical/pathos atmosphere. There is a nice use of a bell as well in the second part of the song which adds a really haunting effect to this song. This takes us back eight years earlier to the bells in Lata's Na Jaa Mere Humdum from Pyar Ka Mausam. The use of counter-melody throughout the whole song is nice as well. Anand Bakshi's lyrics are just excellent, the philosophical meaning is fabulous and so true as well. Philosophical songs make one ponder over life, and this song has a real deep meaning to it. This composition can fall into three categories, classical, pathos, and philosophical. Rafi-saab is as usual fantastic with his rendition, and Pancham makes full use of his outstanding range in this song. The tune is melodious and at the same time very touching, it makes one feel very emotional, and the impact is strong. Rafi glides effortlessly throughout the song, his voice varies from high to low, and the emotional impact is very strong. What a creation by Pancham, and another gem from the magical combination of Pancham-Rafi. This association (Pancham-Rafi) was full of variety, as outlined earlier, but leaving aside the general picture, and just focusing in on the phase 1977-1980, one will notice that even in this phase, Pancham and Rafi created songs in a variety of genres. This phase (we can even say 1975-1980) was a mature phase for Pancham as a composer where he came out with albums that showcased his depth as a composer (besides other albums that were in his signature style), and created gems like this one from Mukti. Here is a link to part of the song that was filmed at the beginning of the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViXEN4m4FWU This post has been edited by princeali: Aug 28 2008, 04:25 AM Prince Ali |
