S. P. Balasubramaniam, popularly known as SPB, has been the leading singer in Tamil and Telugu since the late 60's. He has recorded for several Hindi films, including the phenomenal hit "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun".

In February 1997, a function was held at Music Academy in Chennai to commemorate his "30 Glorious Years of Singing".

This extract is taken from the very first part of his program, following the invocation and the introductory speech. The spoken Tamil is translated below:

COMPERE: "Who is the singer whom you have admired from the beginning"?

SPB: "I'll sing".

SINGS AN EXTRACT FROM "CHAUDVIN KA CHAND HO" (with the flavour or sambaar & rasam --- Unni's input tongue.gif )

SPB:
"My style --- even if I have not imitiated him --- Rafi-sir's influence is upon me, upon my personality. I've seen him at some function. I've never interacted with him, but people say, his............" (interrupted due to his father entering the auditorium).

The audio is attached.

Unni,
SB has always spoken very high about Rafisaab. Well infact all other legends like Kishore, Mukesh, Manadey, Lata, Mahendra Kapoor, Talat and others have acknowledged that Rafisaab in the benchmark. It is however surprsing that a section of their fans can't digest this fact.

PLAYBACK SINGING STARTS AND ENDS WITH RAFISAAB. IN TERMS OF QUALITY, CONSISTENCY & VERSATILITY, RAFISAAB IS INFINITE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF ALL SINGERS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER HIM.

Thanks Unni for this post.

SPB has immense respect for Rafi Sahab. Reminds me of one of his memories when he used to cycle his way to college. He would stop for some time near a panwala's shop. Do you know why? bcoz the paanwala would play Rafi Songs. SPB just couldnt move on.. he would stop there and admire entire Rafi Sahab's song. One such song he recalled was from Kashmir Ki Kali, Ishaaron Ishaaron. He claims no singer can sing the lines as Rafi Sahab did... Yeh Dekh Ke Dil Dooba, Li Pyaar Ne Angaadayi, Deewana Huva Baadal.

SPB has not had classical training. He has mastered it only from admiring legends... more like how Ekalavya mastered his skill just by sheer love, respect and dedication.

Thanks Unniji for an excellent post. Long ago, back home in India, I personally heard SPB on a local radio station saying that Rafi Saab is his most favorite singer among all Legends.

Quality and Popularity are not synonyms.

We know of "one-song wonders" who basked in the glow of popularity for a brief time, then faded away. We are also aware of quality artistes who did not receive the opportunities and acclaim they deserved.

Let us imagine for a moment that "BAIJU BAWRA" was not made, it's songs were never heard. Let us assume that Rafi-sahab had not acquired the mass popularity that followed the success of its songs. Would that have stifled intrinsic quality and innate greatness?

The notable characteristics of Rafi-sahab's solos "O Duniya Ke Rakhwale" and "Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj" were classical content, devotional theme and feelingful, emotive renderings.

Here is a song by Rafi-sahab from a little-known movie "TULSIDAS". Does the song lack any of the characteristics that went into those two famous songs?

Whether it be a big-name banner or a small-time producer, whether singing for major composers or for newcomers, the singing legends of that generation gave all of themselves to each particular rendering. In this instance it is a composition by the respected music-director Chitragupta.

And this is a fine example of a singer's total commitment to the song.

If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.
