I am totally agree with Harold that we should not compare Rafi with God, as a human being we should respect every one(as every one have different meaning of God).

How ever I will also do not see any short comings in Rafi, if he was may be less in one form of music it was not his short comings rather than less stress on that filed as he has also 24 hours of life not 48!, so if he can not go exactly same with every style of music, it was not his short comings for example a great singer of classical music in his whole life juts sing classical and then you compare it with Rafi then the comparison is wrong. Rafi was a truly COMPLETE SINGER.
thanks

QUOTE(Harold @ Nov 7 2005, 01:22 AM) *

Great analysis on Rafi-saab Leo Boy.

Unni-ji, you're absolutely right! Your message is in the spirit of Rafi-saab.

I do agree with Harold when he gives credit to Unni-ji who has the unenviable task of maintaining Hf's high standards at the risk of causing displeasure and uncomfort to some people.

However, I do not endorse his views which brand the write-up of Leo Boy as "Great Analysis." Leo Boy claims that his opinions were based on 'careful research' and 'extensive research'. I would be wary of such tall claims unless I knew what sort of research methodology he employed to arrive at his conclusions and whether such research had any rigor, reliability or validity attached to it.

I am an avid RAFI fan but I try to see him in proper perspective and in reality. I know his limitations and his forte. That is why I find it sickening to praise him so as to exclude everything else. RAFI like all other artists is no God. Yet Sonu Nigam called him one. Here I find Leo Roy saying that Rafi "really had the voice of God. " What sort of research did he do to arrive at such a bizarre conclusion? Has he ever heard God's voice? I am anxiously waiting for a reply. Thanks.

Binod.

Binod,

It does not matter what you think of my analysis. If Mohammad Rafi's voice itself cannot convince you that he is the greatest singer, no amount of analysis from me or from anyone else will ever convince you.

From what you write it is evident that you seem jealous of this great singer and please don't pretend that you are an avid Rafi fan.

As for using the word 'GOD' for Rafi let me tell you that the word GOD is equated with honesty, benevolence, kindness, warmth, compassion for others, co-operation, sincerity, altruism and perfection - I can very proudly say that Mohammad Rafi had all these qualities which reflected in his songs. When Rafi sang, his innate goodness could be felt. You actually feel that it is GOD describing these qualities and hence I say that Rafi had the voice of GOD.

The most fundamental question:
Why do people sing?

The most appropriate answer:
To express their feelings.

So who expresses human feelings perfectly?
Who else, Mohammad Rafi.
When Rafi sings, you can actually identify the mood and the situation without having seen the movie.

Now look, no human being is perfect and you know that as well as I do. Every person has his own limitations.
There is something which even science cannot describe - it cannot explain the ULTIMATE REALITY as to why was the universe created or why does it exist. Science has its own limitations - so don't bother much if my analysis is not scientific, afterall science cannot explain the complex and subtle human feelings which Mohammad Rafi portrayed in his songs.

I shouldn't have actually bothered about replying to you.

Leo-boy .. please tone down your language. We understand your passion for Rafi Sahab very well.

I have edited the message so that it does not sound rude to the other person.

Thank you,

N

And let us please stop right here!

Leo-Boy, with all respect.

This is a very great "Dhaaga" which provides a lot of joy to Rafians. Let's leave it that way please. Do not make it a battlefield. We all love Rafi-saab. Binod-ji is a respected Rafian and member of HF, treat him with respect please.

QUOTE(sri @ Nov 6 2005, 11:42 PM) *

The issue raised by you is most appropriate, Unni.

We are here to enjoy and appreciate the thousands of songs left behind by so many great artistes. Comparison is so out of place here. On the contrary, we should be able to expand our horizons to appreciate the beauty in artistes and songs that we have not yet been privileged to hear. Despite having been listening, for around 50 years, to songs from the golden era of Indian music - there is still so much that I am yet to discover - such is the vastness of the treasure left behind by these great musicians from the sub-continent.

In any case, who the hell are we (just mere mortals) to engage in comparison and arguments (emanating from such comparison) about such great people ? The whole idea is foolish to start with.

It is right to curb this trend and nip it in the bud. I sincerely hope that all our members will understand the spirit behind this approach and focus their efforts in appreciating and sharing the beauty of the vast legacy left behind for our unending pleasure.

Sri

Sri, I agree with your views. When comparision gets to degrading one legend at the expense of another
it is destructive. Sure we all have our favorite artist, but I still immensley enjoy the musical treasure
left behind by others. One important point we need to consider was that all the legends, for most
parts, enjoyed healthy competetion. They had mutual admiration and respect and inspired each
other. Then I think we should simply enjoy the music and do the same.

Ramesh.

To each and every member at HFM

Mohd Rafi was an embodiment of kindness, love, grace and honor. He was a genuine human being. Such was his personal greatness that although he was not feeling well the morning he passed away, he did not say no to the music directors who had travelled from Calcutta for a recoding at his home.

I think a grand human being like him is above all such discussions. Please respect his memory.
