In 1954, Bimal Roy adapted the Bengali story of Sarath Chandra, "BIRAJ BAHU", and picturized it with almost an entirely Bengali cast & crew. Replete with the music of Salil Chowdhury, who punctuated it with gems from Hemant-da and Lata-ji (to be uploaded later). Salil-da's fondness for Lata-ji is well-known. But "BIRAJ BAHU" is a story from Bengal, directed by a Bengali, music by a Bengali, with songs by Bengal's glorious gift to the music world, Hemant-da. Yet, in the scenes approaching the climax of the movie, there featured this song!
Speaking for myself, no voice, no singer could give me the goose-pimples, bring tears to my eyes as this devout Muslim singing "Suno Sita Ki Kahani". "KACHHA DHAAGA" is proud to present: If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.

QUOTE(unni @ Sep 1 2005, 09:41 AM) Here's the video-clip of the song-picturization of a Rafi classic tuned by Madan Mohan, a golden moment in the memorable musical collaboration between the singer and the composer. Due to the poor sound quality of the disc of this old movie, the sound-track is not worth recording. But this famous and popular track is easily found in good quality in audio releases. Thank you for this clip Unni ji, the song is truly a masterpiece ! Here is an excerpt from the article "A Son Remembers" in which Sanjeev Kohli pays tribute to his father Madan Mohan: "On July 30, 1980, the day before he passed away, I spent over five hours at Rafi Saheb's residence for a photo shoot. Whenever we asked him to pose with the harmonium for a photograph, he would play and sing the song Tumhari zulf key saaye mein from Naunihal and keep telling me that this was his favourite and why it was such a brilliant composition. It was my first encounter at being told by somebody I worshipped, that my father was way above the others. He also told me that MM had given him a new lease of life with Laila Majnu." He also told me that MM had Ali-bhai: I had the good fortune to see and hear Rafi-sahab several times at live concerts. I consider myself particularly blessed for having heard him sing live one of his less-known gems, "Jeeyo Tau Aisey Jiyo Jaisey Sab Tumhara Hai, Maro Tau Aisey Ke Jaisey Tumhara Kuchh Bhi Nahin". In my thinking, that song summed up his life. I still wish I'd heard him singing live "Tumhari Zulf Ke Saayey Mein Shaam Kar Loonga". But that was not to be. On a happier note: If you stop trying to make sense of it all, you'll be less confused. Reality is an illusion.

Unni ji, You are very lucky to have heard Rafi saab live in person. To me he will always remain the benchmark in singing. My father and I were just discussing how great and huge a celebrity he was and yet he was such a simple human being. He told me he still remembers the headline written in the Times Of India when Rafi saab had passed away. It said "He Ruled The Silver Screen Like A Colossus". I think this statement says it all about the impact he had not only on film music, but also on us music lovers. If you don't mind, can you please tell us more about you experiences hearing Rafi saab live, how you felt, how the overall experience was. Thanks Prince Ali |

Yes Harold, It is always fine to be good at one'e art but there is no mortal measure to determine Gods blessings, its infinite. Rafisaab's voice is Gods Blessings to this world, one that has no limits, no measure, no peers.....just love, love and love. Never will and we will never see a more truer and more complete institution of singing let alone here but in the entire world. PLAYBACK SINGING STARTS AND ENDS WITH RAFISAAB. IN TERMS OF QUALITY, CONSISTENCY & VERSATILITY, RAFISAAB IS INFINITE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF ALL SINGERS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER HIM. |
