I have a question regarding these songs, and other songs... ![]() What is/are the source of these songs ??? ![]()
The sources are different forums, recording shops, cassettes, TV recordings and SLBC(radio) --Balaji
I wish you could give a short description of the quality of the songs. Most of the songs that I downloaded last week, well, are not so good quality and are hazy (no offence meant). But of course, I know they are very rare songs. And I thank you for such rare uploads. If someone has them in better quality, like from an LP/VCD etc., then please do upload as well ![]() - Music Has No Language -

Well, the file names of the songs I upload contain all the details required except the geetkar. However, if the guidelines are such that the details are to be given in the desired format also, it will be adhered to hereinafter. And Sani Thakurji, I agree that the majority songs I have with me (including some u/l-ed from the forum) are of compromising quality. Most of them are the copy recordings of cassettes & radio. As I donot maintain a record of the source, except the memory, I will give a comment on the quality while u/ling as suggested. But as a true lover of the old and rare songs, one has to compromise to some extent on the quality which I personally do myself. --Balaji |

Help! It appears that I have irritated someone somewhere ... the downloads of my requests have stopped! I hope I've not offended Balaji, mirsa, or my other well-wishers ...
Anyway, here're some of my pre-1950 numbers of Lata, which I should have u/loaded long back: "Tod diya dil mera" was a personal favourite of Dilip Kumar. In fact, he was, initially, not too happy with the Mukesh numbers Naushad created for him in 'Andaz', viz. "Hum aaj kahin dil kho baither", "Toote na dil toote na", "Tu kahe agar" and "Jhoom jhoom ke naacho aaj", thinking them too simplistic. He wanted something, for him, in the vein of "Tod diya dil mera". Naushad, however, as his senior, flatly refused any such accommodation. The result was that "Hum aaj kahin dil kho baither", "Toote na dil toote na", "Tu kahe agar" and "Jhoom jhoom ke naacho aaj", as vocalized by Mukesh, remained. We, of course, have to remain enternally indebted to Naushad for sticking to his guns - these four Mukesh immortals have become part of our music psyche. Those who have seen 'Anokha Pyar' would know that the above numbers have been rendered, in the film, by Meena Kapoor, and not by Lata. With Anil Biswas no longer with us, the reason for this, I suppose, will remain unknown ... There is, of course, no comparison between Lata's and Meena Kapoor's renditions. "Ek dil ka lagana" still sends goose-pimples up my skin every time I hear it. Mind you, I'm not decrying Meena Kapoor in any way ... I regard her very highly as a singer, and one who never got her due. In fact, I regard her rendition of "Aayi gori Radhika Brij mein ..." from 'Gopinath' as superior to Lata's "Yashomati maiya se bole Nandlala", which was, obviously, directly inspired from the earlier tune. Similarly, Meena Kapoor's "Kuchh aur zamana kehta hai" - Anil Biswas's swan song on Nadira in "Chhoti Chhoti Baaten" (1965) is, in my view, on par with anything that maestro created for Lata during his career. Anyway, this ia forum dedicated to Lata, not to Meena Kapoor, so I stop at that. Suffice it to say that, after years of listening to music, I have come to the conclusion that most of the singers of that era were equals in their own right, with each commanding his or her own distinct forte. |

To continue with my upto-1950 Lata sequence ... Here're her two 'Babul' numbers, with that cute cadence only Naushad could extract from Lata. Of course, it remains a matter to consider whether, once u have heard Shamshad vocalizing "Chhod babul ka ghar", anything else from 'Babul' - almost all the songs in which are classics - can enter your psyche.
"Saajan ki galiyan" from 'Bazar' is, of course, an unforgettable from Shyam Sunder, for Lata. Lata's Shyam Sunder numbers are, I find, uniformly mesmerising in quality, whether it is "Saajan ki galiyan" from 'Bazar', "Sun lo sajan dil ki baat" and "Baharen phir bhi aayengi" from 'Lahore' [of which I would rate "Baheren phir bhi aayengi" as one of the greatest numbers ever in Hindi film music, till date] or "Bahaar aayi khili kaliyan" from 'Alif Laila'. In fact, when Noorjehan visited India in the 1980s, "Sajan ki galiyan" - which was sung in the Noorjehan idiom by Lata - was the number Lata chose to render to honour her ... immediately followed by "Allah tero naam Ishwar tero naam"! Anyway, here's "Saajan ki galiyan" ... Anil Biswas was one of the composers who got the very very best out of Lata. These four 'Beqasoor' numbers, as filmed on the ethereal Madhubala, are ample testimony. As in the case of 'Babul', 'Chandni Raat' was another 1949 film in which Shamshad dominated, with one immiortal rendition after another, including those three unforgettable duets with Rafi, "Kaise baje dil ka sitaar", "Khabar kya thi ki gham khana padega" and "Chheen ke dil kyon pher li aankhen". Still, this cute Lata duet with G M Durrani held its own, and still continues to occupy a special place in my heart ... 'Dulari', from Naushad again, saw the scales tilted ... here Lata had 9 numbers, Shamshad 2. I, however, still maintain that Shamshad's "Chandni aayi banke pyar O saajna", even by itself, counterbalanced the 9 Lata numbers in the film. All said and done, however, these 9 Lata numbers remain mesmerising to this day. 7 of them, which I have readily available, are here: |
