5 couples go out for dinner. And when they meet, they do a customary handshake. Unfortunately not everyone is in good terms with each other and hence not everyone does a handshake. Also, no one shakes hands with his/her spouse. One of these 10 people, Kevin, observes that everyone shook hands with different number of people. How many hands did Kevin shake?

Answer:
1. Kevin observed that everyone shook hands with different number of people and since max is 8 (as proved somewhere above), possible number of handshakes for all the 9 people (except Kevin) is 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.

2. Assume P(8) is a person who did 8 handshakes.

3. P(8) did not shake hands with 2 people. One is himself and one is the person with 0 handshakes. This implies that his spouse is P(0). This is because apart from himself he did not shake hands with his spouse.

4. P(7) did not shake hands with 3 people. Himself, P(0) and P(1). This imples that his spouse is P(1) because P(0) is P(8)'s spouse.

5. Similarly P(6) and P(2) are couple and so are P(5)-P(3) and P(4)-P(4).

6. Also all the people Kevin observed did unique number of handshakes. So he belongs to P(4)-P(4) and so Kevin did 4 handshakes.

Point number 3 is the key. If you get that you will understand the problem.

Point number 3 says that

P(8) did not shake hands with 2 people. One is himself and one is the person with 0 handshakes. This implies that his spouse is P(0). This is because apart from himself he did not shake hands with his spouse.

Think about it. Assume that P(8) is Bob and his wife's name is Mary.

Now Bob did 8 handshakes. So he didn't shake hands with himself and his wife Mary.
Also Bob did not shake hands with P(0), because P(0) did not shake hand with anyone.
This means that Bob did not shake hands with three people himself, his wife Mary and P(0).
Obviously this is not possible because Bob did 8 handshakes. So he did not shake hands only with 2 people.

So either Bob is P(0) or his wife is P(0). Bob cannot be P(0) because he is P(8). So his wife is P(0).

Same logic applies for other couples.

Now there is a couple where both husband and wife did 4 handshakes. But the problem says that Kevin observed only unique number of handshakes. So Kevin has to be part of this couple and so he did 4 handshakes.
